We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Pxncho a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Pxncho thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. The first dollar you earn is always exciting – it’s like the start of a new chapter and so we’d love to hear about the first time you sold or generated revenue from your creative work?
The first dollar I earned as a creative a beat that I sold for $20. Nowadays, I tell producers to charge what they really think they are worth. In my case, that $20 beat was the beginning to my whole career as a producer and DJ. That beat was received well by the community in San Diego, Oside Lenz is the artist who bought it. From that beat, he introduced me to another rapper, Nemy. I then sold him a beat which ended up being the song Mr. T, which took over the underground Hip Hop scene in San Diego. My move was to produce for an artist, then ask them to recommend me to another artist they knew. And just like a snowball effect, each client introduced me to a new client and a web of opportunities was created.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I go by Pxncho, I’m a music producer, audio engineer, mix and mastering engineer and DJ. I got into my business as a kid really, I am originally a blues guitar player. Being able to play guitar allowed me to use that skill in my beatmaking. Nowadays, I also at clubs in LA and San Diego. My main goal is to keep getting bigger gigs and to keep producing for bigger artists. I’ve produced for artists like Famous Dex, Riff Raff and Rossi Rock.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
One of the biggest aspects in my career that I always mention is my ability to adapt and change my skill set over time. From being a guitar player, to making beats, to audio engineering, to DJ’ing, I’ve been able to change and evolve as an artist to keep up with the times and not become an outdated artist.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of my career is seeing the younger generations dance and get happy when they listen to my music. I love when my friends come up to me and tell me their kids favorite song is a song I’ve produced.
