We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Punchgut a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Punchgut thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
We all come into this career with a basic knowledge of our field but I have learned more working with clients. Sometimes getting outside of your regular “comfortable” jobs/clients teach you more about yourself and skills. GOOD OR BAD;)

Punchgut, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am an artist / designer/ illustrator and have worked with a wide range of clients. I enjoy the variety of clients and projects from zero budget bands to collegiate logo branding. Clean logo work is a fun change up from a fully illustrated guts and gore project. These varieties keep me excited in future projects and sometimes scare the shit out of me.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Making time to experiment with mistakes! Over the last few winters, i have been sitting down with blank canvas and just illustrating without any rough sketch or concept. Starting with an abstract line or mess and see where it ends up. Rotate the canvas every 15 minutes and start illustrating from a different view. It was REALLY uncomfy at first and now i see some of that linework and style carrying over into client illustrations. Some experiments turn out and others go straight to the fire barrel.

Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
Social media can be inspirational to new artists but it is also hides the “dirty parts”. Computer crashes, endless changes, self doubt, spilled energy drinks, tons of rejected sketches are not posted. Everyone has their struggles and you are not the the only one. Talk to other creatives and get out of your head.
