We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Pujan Prajapati. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Pujan below.
Pujan, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
So, this story starts way back in 2019, in Maasai Mara Kenya.
It was the usual month of October and my dad and his friends had planned a trip to visit the nearby game reserve which is quite famous in the world. While on the trip, I took photos of the wildlife that I saw. My dad’s friend had a DSLR that he used to shoot(capture) animals. I also wanted to take a few photos and test my skills, also to capture the beauty that surrounded me. I took a lot of photos and that just made me happy and knowing that I can show my work to others who can’t make it to the park, just made it a lot better. Since then, I had this wish of owning a DSLR, and I asked my dad to get me one as a birthday gift. I showed him the pictures I had taken from the trip in 2019, and he was amazed. So, on my 15th birthday, I got my first DSLR. I was so happy knowing that my parents supported my work. After that, I had to visit the National Reserve to take photos of the wildlife. At that time COVID was still on the rise and I wasn’t able to visit. But my dad made it possible for me to go there and enjoy taking photos of animals. Then in 2021, I asked my parents to buy me a longer lens so that I could shoot animals from far away. At first, he was hesitant to do it, but then, he realized that I had very good potential in photography and got me the lens on my 16th birthday. I was so happy knowing that I could take better pictures and while respecting the animals’ environment. My dad then took me to the park more often, we had done about 8 Safaris in 2021. Ever since my parents have supported my interest in photography and they are always ready to help me improve in it. That made a huge impact on my work and people started liking my work and getting to know that I am taking photos of the wildlife, and in ways that I can also contribute to the community is amazing.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Pujan. I am 17 years old. My father’s name is Dilpesh Prajapati and my mother’s name is Sejal Prajapati. My hobbies are art and photography. I am from Kenya. I am a student majoring in Computer Science. studying in The US. I got into photography when I was about 6 years old. I was so interested in cameras and photos. I am currently a wildlife photographer, and I also work in other niches of photography. I started wildlife photography at the age of 14. with the first photos taken in 2019. I am proud of my work in that I can show future generations animals that are almost extinct. Some of the photos I take, I submit to competitions that support wildlife conservation. That helps to conserve the parks and to protect the animals from poaching. Articles like this help spread awareness of wildlife conservation.
Is there a mission driving your creative journey?
The mission of my photography is to support wildlife conservation. I want to grow my audience by spreading awareness on why wildlife should be protected and also by setting up a way in which I will be to earn income that will go to the organizations that take care of African Parks and animals. My goal is to get the best out of my work and teach others to do the same.
How did you build your audience on social media?
This is very interesting as it is hard to do it. You don’t just get growth in a few days/hours. You have to provide your audience with the work that they are looking for. Keeping them engaged is one of the most important things. You can have thousands of followers but then you need to have people who like your work and want to see more. I built my audience by posting regularly and keeping my work related to what the people wanted to see. I would post a photo every day, and that helped me grow!
