Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Puja singh Titchkosky. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Puja singh, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
my mission as an artist is to express myself as fully as i can in all ways and hopefully that will inspire others to do the same. we all just want to be seen, appreciated and loved in this world and i think that happens more often when we really allow ourselves to shine. so many systems in this world try to dim us or make us fit into little boxes that will never fully encapsulate the fullness of who we really are so i (and many others) are here to disrupt and challenge that conditioning and to encourage people to be more of themselves as we continue to dismantle the heteropatriarchal, white supremacist systems of oppression.
as a queer, nonbinary trans, indian canadian person living in the us (on turtle island), i have never fit in and it’s made me realize that the times i feel most comfortable and able to be myself are when i’m in spaces with others that are also expressing themselves fully and encourage others to do the same. and those spaces are often queer, trans, bipoc spaces. when we are able to see the diversity in others and appreciate and learn from them instead of being scared, then we all get to have more fun!
whether i’m writing, producing, performing, teaching or practicing, my goal is always community and liberation for all beings.
Puja singh, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
my name is mx puja singh aka puja singh titchkosky (they/them) and i am a queer, nonbinary trans, indian canadian, singer, songwriter, producer and yoga/meditation/music teacher based in los angeles, california (born in vancouver, bc). my work focuses on helping people tune into the power of the universe, slow down, practice presence and find their unique voice in order to more fully and joyfully express themselves in any and all areas of their life.
coming from an indian background (punjabi sikh) and being deeply in love with india from a young age, i am constantly learning more about my own lineage and the practices and traditions that come from this beautiful land and culture. i practice/teach kirtan (indian devotional singing) and study indian classical music with sri subhashish mukhopadyay (a topmost exponent of the kotali gharana).
i translate my spirituality through my music. turning my inner philosophical discourse into poetic lyrics and melodies that disseminate my perspective of this universe. seeing me live is also a spiritual experience and going to a mx puja singh show means you are going to go on a journey through different worlds and emotions. and hopefully come out the other end feeling more empowered, more compassionate and more in tune w yourself and your own voice.
i also teach yoga, meditation and music classes in person and online. practicing for the past 10+ years and teaching for about 7 years, i have studied in the us and india in different hatha, vinyasa, ayurvedic, and nada lineages. and my yoga practices are also informed by other spiritual traditions from around the world and are constantly evolving.
my work is informed by and shared through a lens of decolonization and the dismantling of oppressive systems of power (white supremacy, patriarchy, capitalism, etc). free palestine!
*mx (pronounced mix) is a gender neutral prefix used in the same way as ms, mrs or mr.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
i had to (and am still having to) unlearn the idea of playing small for others. i am naturally a creative, excited, performative person and i love to share myself in that way but there is a lot of conditioning in me that tells me to be small and to not outshine others. there have been so many moments when i’ve held back because i didn’t want to take up too much space but then in the times when i do take up space, it’s so often received with a lot of praise and the excitement and love that i share gets reflected back to me.
i believe that we live in an abundant world and there is space for all of us to shine especially when we are truly being ourselves.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
i think i just wish i knew that there are so many resources out there that are available to all of us but you have to actually use them and ask for things that you want. at this point, basically anyone can go on the internet and learn how to do something whether it’s producing music, painting, designing clothes, running a business, etc. but you have to actually take what you learn online (and irl) and do something with it.
i’m starting to see more and more that a lot of the people that have “made it” are the ones that asked for what they wanted and persevered. some people who are really successful are super talented geniuses and some of them are not. having talent does not mean you will succeed but belief in yourself and your vision and the perseverance to keep going, to keep creating even when others can’t see your vision will get you much further.
also, ask your community for help. i’m still trying to get better at this but we have to remember that none of us are doing this alone (even if it feels like you are). the times when i’ve asked friends to help me out are the times when i’ve created things that i just couldn’t have done on my own. like when i asked one of my best friends to help me produce a music video for my song “community” and we got a group of amazing people together and shot a beautiful video in someone’s backyard (w a pool!) in like four hours! no way i could have done that alone!
