We recently connected with Psylo Soundz® and have shared our conversation below.
Psylo, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
Sometimes, I do wish I would’ve started my creative career sooner! But when I sit back and think about my previous job experiences and how all of them have quite literally helped me in some way, shape, or form, I wonder if I’d have the success I have now if I did start earlier. From being a former psych student to working in the food industry, I’ve learned something in every field that I’ve worked in that has served me in almost unimaginable ways as a creative. I feel like with more support, more guidance, and more just overall love, I would’ve gotten started earlier as well, but I firmly believe I met the right people at the right time and I wouldn’t trade any of that for anything!
Psylo, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hi! My name is Psylo Soundz® and I’m an Afro Latina queer DJ, Sound Engineer, and Music Experience Curator. I currently reside in Chicago, but you can pretty much find me anywhere there’s good music and good vibes! I started pursuing DJing & sound engineering almost 2 years ago and have not looked back since. Over the course of these nearly 2 years, I’ve had the pleasure of exploring great opportunities. From being booked at one of Chicago’s hottest rooftops (Cerise), to getting booked for my first out of state show in NY (Perreo 2 The People). I recently created a collective called “4 The Gheys,” which was created in response to a survey I put out gauging the thoughts, feelings, and attitudes towards the BIPOC LGBTQIA+ community in Indy. Once I read the results of the survey, I knew something had to be done and thus, 4 The Gheys was born. Since it’s natality, I have successfully hosted two events, both of which I brought some of my Chicago DJ friends to Indianapolis for their debuts! I’m most proud of 4 The Gheys because it offers and hosts events that are created for, curated for, and centered around the BIPOC LGBTQIA+ communities in Indy. As a Music Experience Curator, I feel as though it is my job to not only curate a space that feels lively and free, but to also create one that feels safe, inclusive, & representative of the communities I’m apart of. If there’s anything you should know about me, it’s that I heavily value community, empowerment, and putting your people on!
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
One of the biggest lessons I had to unlearn was “hustle culture.” Those super long nights, unhealthy eating habits, always being on the go… all of that sh*t has a major negative impact on your body. I had to learn how to balance my work life and my health and realize that what I want for myself isn’t going to happen just because I work myself harder. I firmly believe in divine timing and allowing the Universe to reveal it’s beautiful plan to me. This doesn’t mean that I sit back and let life do all the work because I do work very hard, but prioritizing my health was something I had to learn through getting sick, experiencing fatigue, and experiencing other health issues. Rest is so, so, so incredibly important.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
