We recently connected with Promise Bennett and have shared our conversation below.
Promise, appreciate you joining us today. We love asking folks what they would do differently if they were starting today – how they would speed up the process, etc. We’d love to hear how you would set everything up if you were to start from step 1 today
First I would prioritize on personal development versus trying to skill stack. Personal development in terms of discipline and creating habits.
Next I would build work on getting to know myself and building a personal brand simultaneously. We often look for inspiration on the outside versus digging deep and discovering our gifts on the inside. After I discovered my uniqueness I would build my brand identity around it.
Lastly, I would build my dream legal team and get my business set up correctly before launching. That team would consist of a business attorney, accountant and business banker.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’ve been an entrepreneur from the very beginning. For as long as I can recall, I’ve had a knack for creating products and services to sell. I can trace my first customer back to my cousin. I’d tidy up his room, but only if I could pocket the change I discovered along the way. I’d go the extra mile with chores around the house to earn money from my parents, not just the ones assigned to me but ones I dreamed up myself. This entrepreneurial spirit has been a constant in my journey, and it continues to guide me today.
Now, I proudly serve as the founder of Bennett Brands Company, a comprehensive marketing agency. My expertise spans various categories, including design, strategy, marketing, and social media. While my official title is “strategist,” I prefer to see myself as a creative visionary. My strength lies in crafting brands from their inception, and I possess a unique gift for helping others unearth their own potential.
What distinguishes me from the rest is my unwavering moral compass and my distinctive process. I exclusively collaborate with brands I genuinely believe in or those that inspire me. I consider my creativity a divine gift, with every project initiated through a heartfelt prayer. I regard my projects as works of art, and I deeply invest in them, driven by a genuine care for the client and their aspirations.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
As I mentioned earlier, my entrepreneurial spirit has always been a part of who I am, but that doesn’t mean I haven’t had to make significant changes along the way. Perhaps the most significant turning point in my journey occurred during my last major pivot. At the time, I was employed as a personal/business banker when I faced a profound loss with the passing of my aunt. This event led my life in an unexpected direction.
One day, I walked into my workplace and didn’t return for six months. During that period, I wasn’t receiving a paycheck because my leave was stuck in a seemingly endless approval process. Surprisingly, the absence of a paycheck didn’t concern me much. It was clear to me that I couldn’t function in my daily work routine given the circumstances.
While I was a banker, I had also been running a side business that didn’t demand too much of my time, allowing me to sustain it during this challenging period. What I didn’t realize at the time was that I was grappling with a deep depression. It took consultations with both a psychologist and a psychiatrist to confirm this diagnosis.
Upon my return to work, I faced a difficult ultimatum within the first week: either keep my job or continue with my business. My side venture was deemed a “conflict of interest.” In a bold move, I chose to bet on myself. I walked away from my job without hesitation and never looked back.
Since that pivotal moment, I’ve been a full-time entrepreneur. What’s even more remarkable is that I rediscovered my passion for design and marketing, eventually deciding to leave my other business behind. I made a conscious choice to pivot toward my passion rather than solely focusing on immediate profit, and I can confidently say that it was a decision that paid off.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Before I graduated, my family experienced a profound tragedy when someone incredibly important to us was incarcerated. This event dramatically altered the course of my life. I transitioned from being a high school senior with college aspirations to becoming the de facto head of our household. Despite this challenging situation, I refused to be completely deterred.
I did manage to attend college for a year initially, but as I witnessed the immense stress weighing on my family, I made the difficult decision to drop out and return home. My goal was to be there both physically and financially for my family during this trying time. It was a decision I never anticipated making, especially considering I had always been the kid who meticulously planned out every aspect of their life before the age of ten.
In hindsight, I am profoundly grateful for this phase of my life. It was during this period that I truly discovered my inner strength. I launched my first business, secured my inaugural corporate job, devoured countless books, participated in numerous seminars, and took on the responsibility of providing for my family financially. I refused to let my circumstances dictate my future; instead, I seized control of my destiny. With unwavering faith and persistent determination, I persevered.
I won’t sugarcoat it; this journey was far from easy. However, I stand as living proof that your present circumstances do not define your future. The businesswoman I am today has been shaped by the trials and tribulations of this journey. I acknowledge that there is still a long road ahead, but I am determined to continue forward.
