We were lucky to catch up with Prithvi Chauhan recently and have shared our conversation below.
Prithvi, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
As a cinematographer, my journey to learning my craft has been a continuous process. It began with a strong passion for visual storytelling and a desire to communicate ideas and emotions through images. I have always learned from the works of great cinematographers and filmmakers, analyzing their techniques and visual language, and learning how they create visual storytelling.
I also formally studied the technical aspects of cinematography, including lighting, camera operation, composition, and color theory during my master’s in cinematography. I learned the principles of visual storytelling, such as shot size, camera movement, and shot composition, and how they affect the audience’s emotional response.
In addition to studying, I gained hands-on experience by working on various film projects and collaborating with other filmmakers. This allowed me to apply what I had learned in a practical setting and develop my skills through trial and error.
I also sought feedback from mentors and peers, who provided me with constructive criticism and advice on how to improve my craft. Through this process, I have continued to grow and refine my skills as a cinematographer.
Overall, my journey to learning cinematography has been a combination of studying, practical experience, and feedback from others. It is a continual process of learning and growth, as technology and storytelling techniques evolve, and I strive to stay current with the latest developments in my field.

Prithvi, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a Los Angeles-based director of photography who specializes in capturing exceptional visuals that elevate the narrative. I have experience working on a variety of projects, including indie films, feature films, music videos, and commercials. My passion for photography began at a young age when my parents gave me a 35mm point-and-shoot camera for a school trip. From there, my love for the art form only grew. While pursuing my bachelor’s degree, I visited art museums in Torino where I drew inspiration from the works of Edward Hopper, Vincent Van Gogh, Rembrandt, and Peder Severin Krøyer. It was then that I knew I wanted to create visually stunning masterpieces of my own. Through cinematography, I have found the perfect medium to bring my artistic vision to life.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the ability to use my skills and vision to bring stories to life and evoke emotions in the audience. When I work on a project, I have the opportunity to collaborate with other creatives, including directors, writers, and actors from all walks of life, to create a cohesive vision for the story. It is incredibly satisfying to see that vision come to life on screen and to know that my work has played a part in bringing that story to audiences.
Additionally, the process of creating visual storytelling is inherently rewarding in and of itself. It requires me to constantly push myself to think creatively and to find new and innovative ways to tell stories through my work. This challenge keeps me engaged and motivated to continue growing and developing my skills.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
While my primary goal is not necessarily to change the world, I believe that the stories we tell have the power to shape culture and inspire change. Being a part of that process and contributing to that impact is incredibly rewarding.
My creative journey is driven by the desire to continue growing and evolving as an artist and to create work that is impactful and meaningful. I strive to use my craft to create work that inspires and challenges audiences, that tells stories that might not otherwise be told, and that contributes to a larger cultural conversation.
Ultimately, my creative journey is driven by the desire to continue learning, growing, and creating work that contributes to the larger cultural conversation and inspires audiences to reflect on the world around them.
