We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Priscilla Vega a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Priscilla thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I never saw myself as an entrepreneur. I double majored in Public Relations and Media Arts. I wanted options. I thought I would either become a producer or a PR executive or maybe both! When I graduated college, freelance wasn’t really a thing. Being “in-house” was the goal for a PR professional. So the plan was to grind at an agency and eventually pick up an “in-house” gig somewhere. I graduated and paid my dues. I started at the bottom and hustled. I am so grateful for the hustle because I still hustle to this day. I am a do-er and I take great pride in being the first one in and last one out. However, my roles and responsibilities have changed but my desire to be a team player has never shifted.
Once I worked my way up and had a solid 6-7 years of experience in the work force, I found myself in circumstances that left me looking for more flexibility as a professional. And by “circumstances” I mean I became a MOM. I made the hardest/easiest decision of my life and left the traditional workforce to stay home with my daughter. Within weeks, I was taking phone calls from fellow entrepreneurial friends and offering opportunities to pick my brain. After some time, I realized this was also called consulting so after some more time I started charging people to pick my brain and then I took on more work to help with PR and then I called them clients and then I had 3-4 clients and that turned into 7-8 clients and eventually it reached 10+ and I finally leaned in to the fact that I was running a PR agency. It was an accidental stumble into my entrepreneur journey but glad it happened so organically for me while I was also navigating being a mom and showing up for my kids the best way possible. I wouldn’t replay it any other way.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
As a PR professional we sell a sentiment to the press and the public. If I don’t wholeheartedly believe in the products and my clients, I would be doing a disservice to them by not fully buying what they’re selling. What sets me apart is that I live and breathe the passion and mission of my clients’ products/services, the press I pitch knows this too. I’m not a mega agency that takes on any client. I either pitch the products I identify as a potential “next-level” product or I carefully select a client that comes my way knowing we are aligned and I believe in the work they’re doing.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
The pandemic was a major pivot moment for us all. Prior to the pandemic, I had a full roster and a full team doing dynamic work in events, pr, and strategic influencer marketing. Then the pandemic hit and I lost half my roster but then gained an entirely new roster of clients looking for crisis communications support. My time at NASA gave me the tools to shift from brand marketing to crisis communications rather quickly but it was a new demand and it was high. I had to navigate the day-to-day demands of shifting gears quickly managing startups to well-established brands all looking for a strategic approach to the changing landscape and the best way to communicate their values to the public.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Honestly, it’s all about the flow. When I have clients that are well-aligned, everything works seamlessly together. My clients collaborate and new opportunities come effortlessly. This is how I know I have a great roster. The clients benefit from each other and it’s critical for my business to keep this in mind when considering a new client. I have to ask myself, will this work with the other clients? Will they all lift each other up and will we grow together?
