We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Priscilla Mora. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Priscilla below.
Alright, Priscilla thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
Speaking from experience, running a business can be extremely difficult when you’re struggling with mental health. I believe that in order to be successful, you have to want to fight through that and get the help you need. That alone takes a certain degree of bravery & grit. In my opinion, people confuse passion and consistency. It’s not always about passion, if you only go forward when you feel passionate you won’t get very far. Of course passion could be a key factor, but success is really that consistency & discipline with yourself.
Priscilla, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My main business is my home based bakery. I offer custom cakes, chocolate covered delights, custom cupcakes, wedding cakes, etc. I am capable of so much more so I don’t believe in placing limitations on myself. I also offer commissioned paintings, hand painted trays, custom crafts & more. I take a lot of pride in being self taught across the board and being so multifaceted. Being able to create and offer all that I can is definitely what sets me aside from others. You can also find me vending at local Houston markets. Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
I want to say vending at Houston markets is a great way to source new clients. But word of mouth is definitely number one. Just like the saying “ it’s not what you know, it’s who you know “. In a sense these both go hand in hand, considering I do meet a lot of clients at these markets. But I will say with certainty that my work speaks for itself enough to have gotten me in rooms I had no idea I’d be in & opportunities I never imagined I’d have.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I initially started my business as selling plates & meal preps. I would offer a weekly menu along with a dessert addition option. I still remember this like it was yesterday, but I sold some shrimp tacos to a friend one day, along with a slice of tres leches. She was obsessed with it & ordered a cake for that weekend. I then kept getting orders and people continued to put trust in me and letting me try new things with their cakes. So essentially, my clients were the ones who pivoted me. I’m always very appreciative of the trust people put in me knowing I’m always learning as I go.
