We were lucky to catch up with Priscilla Molina recently and have shared our conversation below.
Priscilla, appreciate you joining us today. Any advice for creating a more inclusive workplace?
This subject is very close to my heart. It has been my mission for our clients and our staff to know that we love all cultures and backgrounds. It is unfortunate that I continue to see in the event makeup and hair industry artists who only tailor to one type of client. Or hire one type of person. Being able to make everyone feel included and loved is what we strive for!
Priscilla, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have always loved all things beauty! In 2009, I went to Florida College of Natural Health in South Florida (where I am from) and received my esthetician license, which gave me a little taste of makeup artistry. In 2012, I got married and moved to Maryland. It wasn’t until 2014 when I gave birth to my beautiful daughter that I realized pursuing a career as a makeup artist would give me the freedom to raise her and the ability to express my creative side.
In 2015 I started freelancing as a makeup artist in the Maryland, Washington DC and Virginia area for other bridal companies. A few months after my entrepreneurial spirit got the best of me, and I decided to venture out on my own to create my dream team. I also realized that many of my makeup clients asked for hair services as well, so I began the study of up-styling for brides and special events in 2016.
I love diversity and I feel that makeup and hair is an art, and a good artist knows that each work of art should be different than the last. I love creating new looks for each client and helping them feel confident and beautiful in their own kind of way. And even though I no longer take on weddings I truly enjoy teaching my team new techniques that can enhance their already amazing skills.
When I’m not working, I enjoy spending time with my husband and daughter, traveling, seeing movies, listening to music, dancing and finding new restaurants. My faith plays an essential role in my life, and my desire to serve God fuels everything I do, including PriscillaM Beauty.
If it is one thing I want our clients to know is that no matter who you are you are important. You are already beautiful and we are only here to help you feel your best for your special day. I can not speak for other companies but one thing I know is we will put our heart and soul into your event. We truly care about you and your special event.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The strategy has always been to just truly care about our clients. Having genuine concern for their needs and being able to help them see we can help them. In this day in age customer services has fallen short. Many people can not even hold a conversation let alone show someone they truly care. Holding a high standard of customer service for my company has always been top priority. I want people to feel good when they book our services in all aspects not just the makeup or hair services but how they are treated.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Being an entrepreneur is not for the faint of heart. Not only do you have to show resilience in your business life but also having to juggle all that with your personal life. Well my personal life certainly took a toll when I was diagnosed with cancer at the age 33 years old and not to mention the year COVID hit. Talk about a hard time in my life. During that year you can imagine how hard it was to focus or stay on top of my business not including the amount of cancellations or reschedules we had due to venues closing.
I was determine at that time through it all, that I had worked very hard for the past 5 years and I wouldn’t just let everything go. My business got thru that difficult time with finding other avenues of income thru teaching makeup classes online and working microweddings. I was also very grateful for my office staff that help keep things afloat during those challenging times when I wasn’t able to be present.
Now I can proudly say I overcame my cancer and I am now cancer free 4 years! My business is thriving beyond what I imagined and I am on my way to make my first 7 figures. I am forever grateful that even in the most hardest times I did not give up.
