We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Priscilla Locke a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Priscilla thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Are you happier as a business owner? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job?
With any job, there are definitely pros and cons to any industry and career. I actually have a Masters in Education and taught middle school for 9 years prior to jumping in full time to my business. While I was teaching, I was slowly building a brand and career. I would take on a few clients a year, network and build a supportive community and went through plenty of trial and error. This was a very slow process, but I knew I was ready when the time came to jump completely in and leave education. I keep the passion of teaching with some tutoring I do on the side but I am now a full time business owner.
I love the freedom and flexibility it provides for me to continue traveling and building a life that comes with me and my business. Every day looks different and I have freedom in choosing what projects and clients I take on.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am Priscilla Locke. I started out in Education and have a Masters in Higher Education Administration, dedicating 9 years to middle and high school students. I had a passion for the skills it took to educate (time management, organization, leadership etc) but I knew I needed to construct a way to use those skills for my own company. I pride myself in educating my clients now about the wedding industry as most newly engaged couples don’t know what they don’t know. Education is still a very big part of the success of PR Events.
PR Events educates and celebrates down to earth couples that really want a luxury and elevated experience.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
We get most of our current clients from previous clients (referrals) and our colleagues in the business (more referrals). I always say after our clients, our professionals are our next priority. Taking care of the entire wedding day team is high priority. We constantly stay in communication, make sure needs are met (like providing drinks and snacks), staying friendly and approachable to professionals and clients all day long. If people enjoy working with you, they will want to ALWAYS work with you! This starts with network and more so, creating actual friendships and workships! I frequently visit our favorite venues and friendors with little treats or just dropping in to see how we can help their teams. Its been a game changer :)
With our amazing clients, we like to create a stress free environment from our consultation all the way to days after the event. We have been told that our team is calming and supportive. I LOVE THAT! It has created many referals and kind words that help keep our business cycle friends and family events from previous clients.
Have you ever had to pivot?
My entire entrepreneurship has been a pivot. I started in education while I slowly built my business. I went from Full time teaching to part time office work to full time wedding planner. I really appreciated and benefited from a slow transition as it gave me freedom for trial and error as well as build meaningful relationships in the industry.
