We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Priscilla George a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Priscilla, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
This is my first year as a full-time fashion designer and business owner relying on my creative talents alone to earn a living. I juggled being a corporate recruiter by day and sewing all night to get to a point where I could focus on my goals and dreams. I spent the last year as an employee saving and planning but ultimately you can never plan for something you’ve never done. I knew God would never forsake me or leave me so I leaned in and had a lot of faith. ” Use your paycheck to pursue your passion and make that your payoff!”
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I fell in love with the art of fashion design in 1997, I always remember because Naomi Cambell was on the cover of Vogue in this posh old Victorian piece serving melanin realness, as little Priscilla tuned the pages, she came alive, and I knew that I did NOT want to be a model but be the person responsible for making her come ALIVE. I knew I wanted to be apart of that for models and just people in general. Make them feel good and look fierce. I would say I am most proud of making it to New York Fashion Week while at the time still juggling a full-time high-profile job has a recruiter and just life. I had only been in official business for maybe a year once I was given that opportunity and have been invited back. It was definitely an affirming moment in my career thus far. I never stop learning or challenging myself recently stepped into men’s tailoring and plan to launch a full menswear line next spring. My ultimate goal is to be on set as a wardrobe stylist for the next hit show, play, miniseries and design for the full cast! Read the script and design a life for the characters.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
While I design for any and everyone, I definitely want to diversify the world of haute couture and show how traditional African tribal wear can be reimagined. For it to be as mainstream as any popular timeless fashion house.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I love connecting with people, traveling into their imagination and creating magic from an idea through to execution. I pour into my clients, models and show them a representation of a strong Black African woman.
