We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Priscilla Cortez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Priscilla, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.
Since I was a Junior in high school, I knew I wanted to become a Dentist. As soon as I graduated high school, I decided to become a Dental assistant to make sure I was in the right field. I learned dental terminology and became a lead dental assistant. I decided to begin my Dental career and journey so I got my bachelor’s in biology and graduated 4 years later. I Moved to San Antonio to start a Dental boot camp and took the Dental admissions exam. I Went to 10 different Dental schools for interviews but didn’t get accepted to any. After trying for almost 4 consecutive years, I decided to apply to Nutrition school and became a Nutritionist. On December 2020 during the pandemic, I graduated with my Master’s degree in Nutrition. Hard work pays off! Open your eyes to more opportunities and better careers. I didn’t become a Dentist but I love helping people improve their health by transforming healthy bodies.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a 36 year old women who started modeling since 17 years old.
I have been in many fashion shows, in Las Vegas Fashion week and an ambassador of theFerrari races. I also have been in magazines such as Nancy Oakly, Spare dime, and Maxim cover competition in 3 different occasions. I have experience in fashion shows as a model and as a coordinator and organizer (lead model). I have experienced in bikini, lingerie, high fashion and body painting photoshoots. I have also been in two different music videos.

Any advice for managing a team?
As a Model, I like to keep my team together, informed and well trained.
There has been situations in which we have fashion shows, photoshoots and events back to back and my stylist, assistant, makeup artist and myself need to be well coordinated. Sometimes we don’t have the time to eat at the proper time or we only sleep 3 hrs but we try to keep it professional and be productive, that way everything comes out perfectly. It doesn’t matter how we feel we must keep it profesional to maintain a high moral.
As a Nutritionist, it kind of works the same way. Sometimes I am working as a model and I need to be available 24/7 for my patients in case they have questions on meal plans or supplements. It doesn’t matter if I am busy, I have to be there for my patients all the time.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
While I was in school to get my Master’s in Nutrition, I was the top student and I was a leader.
I only had 6 more months to graduate and my grandmother passed away. I was sad, I gave up school for 3 weeks, I got depressed and was diagnosed with anxiety.
The program director immediately reached out to me and ask what was going on and why was I not attending to classes. I mentioned what had happened and she encouraged me to graduate by providing professional assistance. She immediately asked some health professionals to talk to me about the situation. I received therapy from psychologist and a psychiatrist. During my mourning period I had to be resilient and move on.
