Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Priscila Schott. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Priscila, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
Taking risks is a key piece of my journey. Changing my career in a new country as a mother of three and wife was no small feat. As a self-taught artist, with a background in computer science and no formal background in art, entering the space felt daunting. But I embraced the uncertainty, focused on my passion, and took a leap of faith. Looking back at the last decade of my career, I could not be more grateful I took the risk. Being an artist has ensured my creative bounds are continuously pushed and has allowed me to build a community with a shared passion.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I see my creative process as detached from my daily life and influenced by my constant travels. My work focuses on abstract paintings, using mixed media and collage, and geometric abstraction. May mission is for my pieces to require time. Time to assess the play on lights and angles. In my studio, I use patterns and colors, from primary and neutral hues to more vibrant and evocative tones. Repetition also serves as a fundamental element in my work – symbolizing the rhythmic nature of life and time. The selection of material creates a tactile and visual experience. It illustrates one of the dualities of human existence, rigidity and fluidity, coexisting harmoniously. Through my sculptures, I challenge the limitations of the materials to create a distinction between structured forms and chaos, simplicity and complexity, it encourages viewers to reflect on these contrasts.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist, for me is the ability to express myself authentically and connect with others through my work. Using color and shapes, I strive to capture the viewer’s curiosity and invite them to explore the abstract and geometric forms in my art. It’s fulfilling to see how my creations can evoke emotions or spark conversations, allowing people to engage with my perspective in unique ways. Each piece is a dialogue, and knowing that my art can resonate with someone else is incredibly gratifying.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Increase Funding and Grants- Providing more financial resources, such as grants and scholarships, can help artists focus on their work without the constant stress of making ends meet. This funding could also be directed toward community art programs that promote local talent.
Accessible Spaces- Creating more affordable studio spaces and galleries can give artists the venues they need to create and showcase their work. Community centers and local governments can collaborate to establish these spaces.
Education and Workshops: Offering workshops and educational programs can help artists develop their skills and promote their work. This empowers them to navigate the industry more effectively and build sustainable careers.
Promoting Public Art: Investing in public art projects not only beautifies communities but also raises awareness of local artists. Initiatives that encourage murals, sculptures, and performances in public spaces can foster a deeper connection between artists and the community.
