We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Priscila Iwama. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Priscila below.
Priscila , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
“The inspiration for my business was sparked many years ago when I was just 23. At that time, I found myself immersed in an environment that was good but had untapped potential for greatness. I observed that both the visual environment and team management had room for enhancement that could further elevate the experiences of employees and clients alike. My vision was not just about fixing gaps, but about enriching lives: I envisioned streamlined processes that would allow people more time to enjoy their lives and families, coupled with a specialized environment where each client felt genuinely special.
By offering such a transformative experience, we empower our clients to exit our establishment with not just enhanced physical appearance but also elevated self-esteem and personal value. This in turn inspires them to be better versions of themselves, creating a ripple effect of positivity that I like to call ‘The Butterfly Effect.’ It is through such incremental changes that we can make the world a better place, one person at a time.”
Priscila , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Embarking on her journey in 2010, Priscila Iwama honed her expertise in skin science and forged meaningful collaborations with esteemed plastic surgeons. Driven by her clients’ testimonials, who grappled with both emotional and physical difficulties arising from visible scars and other imperfections, she ventured into the art of permanent makeup.
At the time, the industry was still in its nascent stages, frequently compromised by the quality and safety of products. Undeterred, Priscila embraced the challenge and initiated an ongoing process of innovation and refinement. She established an open channel of communication with her clients, who were aware they were partaking in something truly groundbreaking.
Her pursuit of excellence culminated in the development of proprietary machinery, needles, and products. She also pioneered a new concept in the permanent makeup field, termed Dermopigmentation. This new domain encompasses both cosmetic aspects—like eyebrow microblading, lip pigmenting, and lash line enhancement—as well as medical applications such as scar camouflage, vitiligo treatment, hypopigmentation, and mammary pigmentation, among others.
Today, Priscila leads her own trailblazing clinic in Boca Raton, the most recommended in the field with techniques that have garnered medical recognition across the American territory. A team of carefully selected, highly trained professionals reflects her relentless pursuit of excellence. Internationally acclaimed, she is also an influential mentor, shaping the next generation of practitioners across multiple continents.
What truly sets Priscila apart is her immaculate commitment to client well-being, underpinned by a unique symbiosis of technical rigor and refined aesthetics. The crux of her journey lies in how her desire to enrich her clients’ lives became a gateway to a new transformative universe, impacting not just herself but everyone privileged enough to be led or served by her.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
One significant lesson I had to unlearn was relying blindly on established logic and statistics as roadmaps for my own journey. Early in my career, I encountered skepticism and doubt regarding the viability of improving existing techniques in my field. These efforts were often met with the assertion that “this is the way things are done,” a mindset that limited me to living within the boundaries of what already existed.
Moreover, in 2019, I made the audacious decision to move to the United States, despite not speaking English. Many considered this a risky choice and doubted that I could replicate my success in a new country. However, I had to tune out these voices. I learned that while it’s valuable to hear other people’s experiences, following established “logic” blindly can be a hindrance to innovation and personal growth.
So, I had to unlearn viewing statistics and precedents as unquestionable allies. Instead, I began to see them as indicators but not determinants of my own success. This shift in perspective was pivotal in paving new avenues that led to achievements many deemed “impossible.” In summary, unlearning this old mindset allowed me to be the trailblazer in my own story, rather than a passive spectator.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Confronted with the violence and corruption that plagued my beloved home country of Brazil, I made the weighty decision to seek a safer, more stable environment in the United States. The sale of my dermopigmentation clinic in Brazil provided the initial capital for this monumental journey. Although a substantial sum in Brazilian currency, it dwindled considerably when converted to dollars, barely covering our immigration process and basic living expenses.
Arriving in a new country without language fluency, I was fortunate to receive an internship offer from a friend. I eagerly accepted, using this period as an intensive learning phase for English and cultural assimilation.
Simultaneously, I found an opportunity to resume my expertise in dermopigmentation by initially renting a room in a medical clinic in Boca Raton. My work quickly earned the respect and attention of the local medical community, allowing me to expand my operating days.
With judicious investment in digital marketing, my business took flight. Within a year and a half, I inaugurated my own clinic. But I didn’t stop there; I started offering training courses in dermopigmentation and even launched my own line of specialized products and equipment. Today, I’m a leading figure in the field, attracting clients and students not just locally, but from various parts of the United States and the world.
This journey, filled with linguistic, cultural, and financial hurdles, serves as a testament to my resilience. Each obstacle became a stepping stone to my success, providing yet another opportunity to extend the impact of my work.
