We recently connected with Priscila Buiar and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Priscila, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
I’ve done so many meaningful projects as an artist, and I feel so blessed and grateful every single day to be able to live in this life and touch people and somehow transform them through my work that it’s very difficult for me to choose just one in particular. But in 2022, I was part of a series that had a great audience, and suddenly, my life just changed. I have huge engagement online, and people constantly send me messages every day. Sharing a little bit about their story, their struggles, and how they feel somehow motivated or inspired by me because I’ve always worked a lot and I try to chase my dreams every day, despite any difficulty in front of me. Last year, I decided to do something about it. I wanted to give back all the love and support I receive every day. So I created this project called Self-Care, where I share everything that I do in my routine to take care of my mental and physical health. In the beginning, I wasn’t sure where I wanted to go with this, but since I started this movement, I see how people are impacted to take care of themselves. Through therapy, they can get professional help to deal with traumas and to try to understand themselves and everything that has happened in their lives. With the exercises and healthy recipes I teach them with my nutritionist, they can take care of their bodies. And I always wonder: Imagine if I could prevent someone from having a disease in 30 years. It’s like life is using me to do something so much bigger than myself. I’m only the instrument that life is using to inspire women to pay attention to themselves. And this way, every one of them can impact and influence their family, partner, kid, friends, etc. This is how this movement starts to flow, and we create a better world and coexistence with everyone. I’m very shy, and I usually don’t talk a lot. And I know that making the world a better place seems like something utopian, and that talking to people to do this and that is cheap. Therefore, I believe change is being an example. And I feel very proud of how our actions can really change things. We cannot change others, but we can change ourselves, and by getting better, improving ourselves, and chasing our dreams, we can influence our environment and the group of people that live around us. And for me, as a public figure, I can influence the ones that follow me. So I always try to use my voice to do that. That’s my purpose as an artist.

Priscila, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am Brazilian, and I started working when I was nine years old. I’m definitely defined by my occupation because I never made a choice about being an actress. Art chose me when I was very young. That’s the thing about art: it’s like a call. It becomes a purpose, and it becomes a part of you and who you are as a person. I started acting before I even knew what I was doing, and it’s so funny to watch my first projects in videos or photos and see everything I’ve been thrown to get here. especially because most of the time I was not sure about what I was doing, I just did it. I just knew my heart and my gut wanted to do that, so I just followed my desire and my dreams with the flow. At this point, I think that it’s very important for me to say that I always had support from my mom. She is the most amazing woman I know, and she always wanted to work, travel around the world, discover different cultures, etc. But she never had the support of others, so she decided to do it differently with her two kids. I always had her approval to study a lot (that’s why I’m a big nerd and a good reader), and that’s why I was never afraid of following my dreams. She always had my back. I think that it took me a few years to realize that this made a huge difference in my career. It’s so hard to be an artist, but I never really thought about it because she always made sure to make me believe that I was capable of it all. Her faith is bigger than all the difficulties in my career.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
What I realized with my fans and followers, who are almost all women, is that we usually don’t have the support to be independent, to be successful, to be bosses, or to follow our dreams. I’m lucky to have this from my mom, so that’s why I’m trying to help them develop self-love through self-care. One of the topics that we are discussing is financial education. Society doesn’t encourage us to talk about money. However, I do. I want them to have control and independence in their lives. I also try to inspire them to read. We have this amazing book club where each person gives their own opinion about a story. Most of the time, we disagree in a lot of aspects because everyone has their own point of view, which is great. I love the capacity of our group to hear each other and to agree and disagree. I think smart women respect other’s opinions and also question themselves about what they hear. Which is something we have lost these days. I feel like we have created this community where all of the participants feel safe to share their opinion, experience, point of view, and life, knowing that others won’t judge but will give support, and that’s priceless for me. especially because we have people from all over the world, we talk in different languages, and we have different cultures. But we’re all connected for the same purpose: to support each other.

Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
Recently, I was very inspired by Viola Davis book. I always admired her by her acting skills and watched all of her work because she’s a big reference and inspiration for me. But after I read her book, it touched me in so many ways. She had all the reasons to give it up. I mean, really, I don’t know how she had all that strength to chase her dreams. Without money or support.. It took her 34 years to have her first leading character. But when she did, when she had the opportunity, she just nailed it. She was ready, she was prepared. She had been developing herself for that opportunity her whole life. So I think she is the best. Her life, path, career and resilience are so admirable and inspirational for all of us. I deeply recommend the reading.
