Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Princeton Brown. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Princeton, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
Being a creative is my nature. I realized early on after graduating college the typical 9-5 work lifestyle would not fulfill my spirit, soul, and ultimately my legacy I want to leave behind. I couldn’t express myself in the ways I wanted, and at the level I wanted to. I graduated from Augsburg University in Minneapolis, MN with a B.S. degree in physics because deep down I’m very interested in knowing how our world works and being problem solver, but quickly I found once having a job as a high school teacher the lifestyle, routine, and grind of a 9-5 wasn’t fulfilling enough. Even though I loved the school I worked at, the students, the impact we were making, I still felt I was limited in how much I could make in impact in the world.
I’ve always known what I’ve wanted to do since I was a kid. Music was always my calling. More specifically, to be a messenger through my songs with a mission of changing lives through my music.
Princeton, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My mission is to change the lives of people around the world by spreading positivity through music. I’m both a recording artist and music producer based in Los Angeles where my day to day is creating, producing, and releasing music for myself and others.
The journey of how I got into music started at a young age when I first learned how to play the drums and piano at my local church in Minneapolis, MN. Growing up I had a mother who was a trained pianist and a father from Jamaica who was a DJ. Music was always being played in the house. In addition, my father always had a studio set up in our home where he’d bring recording artists from Jamaica to record “dubplates” for his sound system “Everready 9000.” In addition, we’d visit Jamaica every year as a family and once I began learning how to make beat with FL Studio my father and I would find artists in Jamaica to record on them. My father has many ties and a long history of the music industry in Jamaica before moving to the United States with my mother.
I never used to write my own songs until one day my father told me I had to write and sing lyrics to the beat I make as well. In grade school I was always a good writer, especially with poetry, but it wasn’t until my father said this to me that I began making full songs. From here I released my first album called “Simple Livin.” During this time I was in college at Augsburg University in Minneapolis, MN, studying Physics. A few of my songs from this album as well as singles that followed shortly after including “Jamaica,” and “Be Your One,” were getting attention in Jamaica but it was difficult to continue the momentum of promoting these songs in Jamaica while living in Minnesota and finishing college.
After graduating college I started working as a high school teacher at the High School for Recording Arts (HSRA) in St. Paul Minnesota. I chose this school because I could utilize my degree as a teacher, make a difference with the students I’d be teaching, and be connected to a full on professional studio. Around my 3rd year working at the high school I realized I wanted to dedicate more of my time towards pursuing music but couldn’t because I always had to show up to school as a teacher. I needed to make a change.
This is when I started leveraging my skills in audio engineering I learned over the years while producing my music to help others achieve greater sounding songs. I branded myself at the time to “Princeton Brown Mastering,” which is currently “Sonic Gold Productions.” Creating a business where I could help other artists, learn from them, make new connections in the industry, control my schedule, and earn money in the process was vital. Currently, with my music production brand “Sonic Gold Productions” I specialize in helping artists “transform their songs into sonic gold” by offering a one-stop-shop for music production, which includes recording, making the music/beat, arranging, mixing, and mastering. Some of the biggest names I’ve worked with or have been in studio sessions with are Davido, Yemi Alade, Blvk H3ro, Dexta Daps, Stokley Williams, and many more.
Many artists want to get great sounding records so they can compete with songs on the radio, or songs from their favorite artists. They want to be heard and seen as a professional offering quality produced music. The key is there aren’t many producers who have a high level of proficiency in all areas of music production (playing instruments, producing beats, writing, mixing, mastering, etc) like I do. In addition, when you find people who know so much about music they can be hard to work with because of their superior knowledge and skill set. I had to learn the hard way. I learned through years of trying to figure out how I could achieve the highest quality production for my own music, so I know the struggle many artists face in that realm. I’m here to share my years of experience with others by helping artists to produce their best music yet.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Yes. I believe I’ve been blessed with a gift to make impactful music. My entire life has lead me to foster/grow this gift through learning instruments, production, and songwriting so that I can best convey the healing, uplifting, and moving powers of my music.
My goal is simply to change the world through being a light. A light that shines through music. In this way I feel I can create the greatest change because music can be loved and appreciated by many people worldwide irregardless of language barriers, culture, religion, race, etc.
We all want to feel, give, and live in love. I know I can spread this and hopefully change people’s outlook on life through a mass scale via the music I create.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
To create something from nothing is a gift and a blessing. I don’t need a large investment, or take on a bunch of risk to create a product that has the potential to be timeless. A product that can change the way people see life, see their life, and hopefully make everyone get through this thing we call “life” a bit easier. I have the power to heal people on a massive scale through music, frequency, and vibration. Not many disciplines in life have such a reach and profound effect on humanity.
