Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tiana Dean. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Tiana, thanks for joining us today. Do you wish you had started sooner?
I honestly do wish I had started the music career earlier! I was so ignorant to the fact that this was something that could be done on an independent level and I feel if I would have started earlier I could have gotten artist development at an earlier age. I would have been able to be trained and coach on a younger level and have that mindset that I can do anything instead of starting as an adult and being set in my ways! When I first started 8 years ago, I was not singing or breathing correctly, I was doing what I thought was right because I had never had vocal lessons. I have never attended any writing camps to help expand my knowledge. I only know what I taught myself and that did not come with much research at all. So I guess it’s natural talent, but I honestly do wish I had the training that I needed at an earlier age than waiting until later. I think it would have gotten me into a lot of different rooms sooner rather than feeling like I’m playing catch up, but hard work pays off in the end always!
Tiana, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am Tiana Dean, a pop/rnb songwriter/vocalist. Songwriting was something that I grew up doing as a hobby. I was very sheltered as a child so I was unable to listen and watch a a lot of things so I had to be creative in order to entertain myself. I wrote songs in my room to beats in my head that I would want to hear or sing about. I use to imagine being a pop star in a group with my sister! It wasn’t until I seen a friend of mine, Vo Fareal, show me his music video that it all became obtainable. I started meeting other like minded people who recorded and followed their dreams because that’s all mine ever was to me, a dream. I grew up singing in church and school choir but it was what I did because I enjoyed singing. Back in 2015 I met a really good friend that has recorded, mixed and mastered every song put out by me named Roger and he would let me come in the studio and record covers to other industry artist songs. I would complain how I didn’t like how I sounded because I was trying to sound like them so he encourage me to create my own song with my own sound. That’s when I wrote my first recorded song “Dance With Me” and submitted it to be played as the 513 Heat on 101.1 the Wiz! From then on I knew this was something I was meant to do and I have accomplished so much with doing it! I’m proud at the fact that I didn’t let my lack of knowledge deter me from following my dreams and that I have stayed consistent ever since I have started. I have challenged myself in so many ways! I remember my first show I rocked back and forth in the same spot the entire performance and now I’m on stages with bands and Dancers rocking to the beat of my own drum!
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Recently in 2022 my social media was removed from all platforms. I had to restart everything and I was so discouraged. I had built my brand and social media presence up for the last 7 years and that time so starting over wasn’t an option for me. After weeks of going back and forth with Meta I had to take it on he chin and restart my Facebook page and my instagram page. I have been able to gain a nice size following since restarting and it grows more and more everyday! My best advice to those just starting out is do what works for you! If you are funny, be funny! Record content of everything and stay consistent!
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal for all of this is to be a writer. I want to get song placements for other artist and be a producer. I want to be more behind the scenes and not the face of it. Eventually I’ll rebrand and create my own creative space. Not a label but more so an artist development space so I can provide materials and knowledge to other independent artist that were just like me at one point in time. I want to continue educating myself on the business aspect as well. I enjoy being the artist for the most part, but I would like to go back to doing that part as just a hobby and focus more on what can I do for others in this business. It’s a very competitive and expensive market that can cause a lot of people to give up and quit especially when they feel they are doing it alone.
