We recently connected with Princess Boyd and have shared our conversation below.
Princess, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
I’ve taken a few risks in my life. The biggest one was deciding to work for myself rather than someone else. The traditional path of going to school, getting a good job, and working a 9-to-5 is what most people expect. But after experiencing that, I realized it wasn’t what I wanted. I finished school and left my job, and I haven’t looked back since.
It’s not easy to take this route – you need to have things in place and think it through carefully. But it’s definitely possible if you put your mind to it and are willing to grind. Cultivate self-confidence. Believe in your abilities and trust in yourself. Now, I’m loving it! I live by the motto “work now, play later.” I’d rather take the risk, learn from the obstacles, and enjoy the rewards once everything is working for me.
Princess, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hi everyone! My name is Princess, and I’m a content creator. I started creating content due to a broken heart, but it gradually evolved into one of the greatest blessings I could have ever asked for. Over the past 4 years, I’ve managed to grow a following of 900,000 on TikTok and 133,000 on Instagram. This is truly a blessing, and I thoroughly enjoy it, especially the interaction with my supporters, though I can’t engage with all of them. They are the reason I’m able to thrive with my content, and for that, I will forever be grateful.
Because of my supportive audience, I began selling merchandise, which led me to open “It’s PeeBee, Babyyy LLC.” This was always part of my plan, though I didn’t expect it to happen so soon. I had fears about failing or stopping my growth, but God’s timing is not my own. In a way, my audience pushed me to take this step due to the overwhelming demand for my merchandise. For now, I sell products like calendars, puzzles, journals, keychains, magnets, pins, and soon, apparel. The LLC is quite versatile, and I have many plans beyond just selling merchandise, such as real estate, giving back, etc.
So far, I’ve had a very positive experience with my customers. I always ask for their feedback and opinions on the products, and I’m dedicated to addressing any issues that may arise. As I sell merchandise, I wanted to find a way to give back to my customers as well, some way, somehow. So I’ve implemented a rewards program. Customers earn “diamonds” with each purchase that they can redeem for discounts. Seeing a few of my customers use their points makes me truly happy – it’s the little things that matter most.
I believe what sets me apart is simply being myself and being transparent. I don’t sell just to sell; I put thought, time, and love into all my products, and I hope my customers can see that. I always remind them to take care of their own business before worrying about me, as our customers are the fuel for our businesses, but they can’t be that fuel if they’re depleted. There are many incredible, successful businesses out there, and I never want to be or feel like I’m in competition with anyone. Everyone has their own calling and their own story, and there’s enough out there for everyone to succeed.
I’m most proud of overcoming the hardest obstacle I faced in my life and starting my business in January 2024 and the journey of learning as I go. (Shoutout to my homegirl!) While I’ve had some trial and error along the way, I’m appreciative of those experiences – they’ve taught me so much. My brand, PeeBee, is deeply meaningful to me as it pays homage to my grandma, who gave me that nickname.
Overall, I’m here for it all and I’m willing to put in the work to make my business a success. I’m humble, understanding, and caring when it comes to my brand and my customers. I’ll never do anything to tarnish what I’ve built.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Good question! July of 2020 I became homeless. Despite being homeless and working overnight shifts while attending school, I persevered. I often relied on bread, eggs, and fast food, and even experienced a heat stroke trying to save money on gas. Despite the hardship and the loneliness, I kept a smile on my face and remained a positive light for others, even in my darkest moments. For three years, I bounced between my car, two houses and hotels. At one point I didn’t think I was going to overcome it. But, I kept my faith, continued learning, and found different ways to make ends meet the best way I could.
There were certainly doubts and questions, but I knew this was a test I had to overcome – an obstacle placed before me for a reason. One of my favorite Bible verse states, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding” (Proverbs 3:5). Even when the path is unclear, we must have faith that God’s plan is unfolding, and that he makes no mistakes. The struggles I endured, however difficult, served a greater purpose. I have been blessed with unprecedented growth – my mindset and patience have grown exponentially. And now I feel unstoppable.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I built my audience on social media by being my authentic self. I aimed to ensure my supporters that what they saw online was an accurate reflection of who I am in person. I started Tiktok June of 2020. I would post 3-4 times per day. My social media presence had been growing slowly and steadily until August 2022, when one of my videos unexpectedly went viral. I woke up to an overwhelming number of notifications and an outpouring of positive feedback on the video. It definitely caught me off guard because I was not expecting that. The video’s unexpected viral success was a blessing in itself, which is why I firmly believe God makes no mistakes! Since then I’ve been growing more and loving every bit of it.
The advice I would give for those just starting to build a social media presence is being authentic and transparent in your online presence. Some people present a different persona online versus in real life. Don’t be that person. Strive to showcase your genuine personality through your content so your audience knows what to expect. Share personal details only when you’re truly comfortable doing so. Don’t want all your business out there lol.
Success takes time – don’t get discouraged by slow growth in views and likes. Keep creating and grinding, no matter your current follower numbers or engagement. The most important thing is to stay true to yourself throughout your journey. Overnight success is rare, so be patient and persistent. Your genuine, authentic content will resonate with the right audience in time.
