We were lucky to catch up with Prince Miller recently and have shared our conversation below.
Prince, appreciate you joining us today. One of our favorite things to brainstorm about with friends who’ve built something entrepreneurial is what they would do differently if they were to start over today. Surely, there are things you’ve learned that would allow you to do it over faster, more efficiently. We’d love to hear how you would go about setting things up if you were starting over today, knowing everything that you already know.
If I were to start over as a graphic designer/videographer, the thing I would do differently is use social media as a tool heavily and upload my work every chance I get. In the sports creative business, it’s all about what you know, but most importantly, it’s about who you know. Posting your work on social media helps get your work into the eyes of other creatives with whom you can network and can help create opportunities for you.
When I received my first internship with Two Circles Made, I showed them my Instagram page with all my graphic design work on it. Seeing this, they were able to tell I was serious about my craft and what I do and offered me an internship on the spot. This led to me networking with a team of talented graphic designers, videographers, and creatives that opened doors for me that I wouldn’t have before. When I was hired to be the videographer for Pitt State Football, they skimmed over my cover letter, completely skipped my resume, and went straight to my social media to see my work, which is where they decided to hire me because of the work I had posted.
The sports media business is growing, and social media is a huge part of it. Posting your work and getting eyes on your work is the most important thing to help you network and build opportunities for yourself. Even if you’re not collecting views from your work, all it takes is one person to see your Instagram reel, TikTok, Twitter video, or Facebook post to decide if they want you to work for them.
When I originally began posting, I was worried about what people would think, so I didn’t post all of my work, afraid of judgment from my peers. After getting over this fear, I started posting the majority of my work on Instagram and TikTok. After doing this, I had several posts go viral and catch the eyes of big sports companies like Overtime and Barstool. Their repost of my videos helped bring more eyes and more clients to my page, in turn helping me build stronger clientele and expand my business. So if I had to restart and do something different, I’d hit that post button just a little more.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Prince Miller and I am a sports media creative. I create videos, and graphics, and do photography. Currently, I work for Gorilla Football which is Pitt State University’s football team located in Pittsburg, Kansas. Here, I am the creative director where I run the social media, create graphics for the team and recruits, and create weekly hype videos for the team to boost morale and overall hype for the team.
I began creating sports content in 2021 for my high school, starting as a photojournalist for my yearbook before slowly transitioning to mainly video in 2022. I began creating graphics in 2022 as well. In 2024, I interned for one of the best media companies in the KC area, Two Circles Made, where I was originally brought on as a graphic design intern, but with my interest in both graphic design and video production, I worked for both sides and gained experience in both. During my time there I worked for Sporting KC, KC Current, DC United, NFLPA, and created internal work for the company. In April 2024, I was hired by the Pitt State Football Team as a videographer originally, but my skill set in graphic design allowed me to take over running the social media for the team and eventually become the creative director, running both the social media and the creative direction of the football team’s online presence.
My job is to create stories and memories that will be cherished forever.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
A story of resilience I think every creative faces is that first couple months or year where you’re just trying to build your portfolio. A lot of the time it consists of doing hard work for free and being paid in exposure, which is hard to do, but when you’re willing to hustle and get through it, it pays off in the long run.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
A resource I wish I had known about earlier in my creative journey was other creatives. When I first started out, I was determined to be the best videographer/graphic designer. Because of this determination, I found myself comparing myself to other creatives of similar size or bigger and seeing them as the enemy or competition instead of as a companion. The sports media world is amazing, and the creatives are too! Realizing this, most creatives are willing to answer any questions you have and are willing to share resources to have when it comes to getting better. The sports media business is extremely competitive and growing every day, but it can get more competitive and difficult if you see everybody as the enemy.
