We recently connected with Prince Frazier and have shared our conversation below.
Prince, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today. Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
I am ecstatic to be an artist. My career is still fresh with plenty of room for growth. After really working on myself and finding out who the true Prince “T’Challa” Frazier is, the path to becoming a self-employed artist has become effortless. Technically I still have a regular job. At the time of writing this, I am a sophomore at the University of Massachusetts Lowell studying “Composition for New Media”, I am part of the work-study program where I am currently working in the mailroom which is by far the closest thing to a traditional job I have had.
To me, this is a good experience for any artist because I work with different customers every day which is not too far off from interacting with a crowd while performing or greeting fans after a show. I do believe a regular job like this one is temporary and more of a stepping stone to learning basic skills that can be applied to my artistry which will only strengthen my skills.
Prince, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started playing music at a young age. My father constantly kept me surrounded by music and taught me about different artists of various genres. Geoffrey Williams, Black Sheep, and Ann G to name a small percentage of the artist he has introduced me to. Overall having so many influences, and establishing my genre was weird but I landed on Indie/Pop but influences from everything I hear and play.
2020 was an important year for me. We all know what was going on during that time. I had several shows lined up, recording sessions, and a whole host of other activities I was utterly thrilled about, all postponed for safety reasons or canceled altogether. I will be honest, I was definitely depressed during the first couple of months of quarantine.
After a conversation with my amazing mother and father, I realized just because the world stopped doesn’t mean I have to stop improving and writing. So naturally, I went into a craze writing new music, practicing my original music, and overall improving many different aspects of my musicianship which I am truly proud of myself for and continue to improve in every day.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
I believe society can best support artists by literally just being there. Existing and engaging with the artist and their work. No matter if they are a superstar or starting. Reposting, buying, or just telling a friend to tell a friend about this new artist that you enjoy and has potential goes a long way. To me, if the artist shows interest in building a community with their fans, then the fans will reciprocate, so in a way, not all of the weight is on society for supporting an artist. It is also on the artist themselves to form a welcoming environment.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being creative in your experience?
This sounds a little cliché I know, but I love seeing the smiles and reactions of fans when I perform or release a song. I am sent messages about how much they loved the song, or if the piece emotionally connected with them. That feels great, and nothing else could ever replace how rewarding it feels to have someone tell you how your art has touched them. Another rewarding aspect is my feeling of pride. Just sitting there listening to a finished and mastered song or watching a performance I worked hard to pull off and just feeling proud that I did that feels amazing. As an artist, it is important to give ourselves pats on the back from time to time.
Honestly, as human beings, we deserve to give ourselves pats on the back when we have accomplished something we worked hard for no matter how big or small it is.
