We were lucky to catch up with PrettyK K recently and have shared our conversation below.
PrettyK, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Do you have a hero? What have you learned from them?
I would say my hero is my mom. All my life that has been my superwoman. I’ve seen her raise five of us on her own and get through every obstacle she has had while doing so. One thing I have learned from my mother is to always keep going no matter what, build new skills and continue to find other things that you’re good at. She has influenced me to be more open minded with people and opportunities.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I was born and raised in Decatur, Ga but grew up here in Columbia, SC. Growing up I’ve always loved reading and writing to a point I would isolate myself from others just to do so. At 9 years old I remember writing stories, poems, lyrics and anything my mind thought of. I remember finding a composition book full of lyrics my dad wrote and being inspired to have one of my own. In middle school I began posting freestyle videos of myself on Instagram. At that time I took chorus and dance classes so music was always involved. In high school a friend of mine encouraged me to go to a recording studio and take it more serious . From then I have been perfecting my craft and constantly building the skills to become a better Artist. I am most proud of the music I make and being able to continue to keep pushing even when it gets discouraging. Im proud of the way I am able to tell my story through my music since I have always been shy and struggled with explaining how I feel, my craft is my output. I want my potential supporters to be able to relate to my music no matter the emotions or mood. I would say my melodic music is very relatable and I want to be the voice for those who feel misunderstood and all alone. My upbeat music is fun and puts others in a excited mood and I love having the chance to perform and entertain the crowd.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I built my audience on social media from posting all kinds of content. I would post dancing videos, freestyles and videos showing my personality. I make sure that I always engage with my followers and stay consistent. If you’re trying to build a social media presence the best thing to do is be yourself. Always be authentic and unapologetically you. Stay consistent with new and creative content.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Being a independent artist can be hard starting off with no team. I began my journey in high school not knowing where to start. I had to find everything out on my own with very little music influences around me. It gets hard paying for beats, studio time, and videos. I didn’t have much and was working at Jersey Mikes, I started investing in local showcases to perform at. A lot of the times I paid more money to perform and won nothing but was just happy for the experience and exposure. I kept going and investing in myself and paid $50 to perform at a showcase. That day I left with $1000 and my record playing on the radio.
