We recently connected with Pretty Riski and have shared our conversation below.
Pretty, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
I really wish I had put myself out there earlier. Everyone knows me as THE makeup artist (Perspective Beauty), always with the big lashes and dramatic look and out and about with your favorite makeup brand — I’ve never been afraid to be myself really, but the thought of sharing my feelings to the world through music seemed distant to me.
I started singing in the 4th grade, of course I was in chorus! I swore I was in the opera and my mom was so over it. I’ve spent a good majority of my music career just writing music, listening to beats in the car and not recording a single lyric. I remember this one specific instance where someone close to me made fun of me for putting my singing on Instagram and I NEVER posted about it again.
This past year when I attended Revolt World Tour, my friend Quavea encouraged me to join the McDonald’s Rap Challenge — but like I said before I literally haven’t sang or rapped in years in front of other people — let alone MCDONALD’s and at that point I only had one song out too.
Freestyling is my forte, but not under pressure — even though I did not win that day it’s lead me to release 4 new songs and counting. I’m glad I’m getting started now because I have more time, maturity and creative freedom that I didn’t have before. I’m bringing in Bangladeshi culture into rap music and turning this sh*t up!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
how you got into your industry / business / discipline / craft etc,
I’ve always loved writing music, I know I have a talent and it’s for the world to see. I go by Pretty Riski cus 1) I’m pretty 2) I’m also pretty risky. I didn’t have anywhere to record my music and didn’t have the budget for studio time — and one thing about me I’m going to make it happen. So I saved up and bought my own recording mic set up from Scarlett and got myself started in November 2023.
what type of products/services/creative works you provide,
I make rap songs that feature the language: Bangla. I write, mix and produce my own songs as well as create the visuals you see on my instagram: @prettyriski
My goals this year are to feature on some of my favorite artists’ songs, do more interviews, podcasts, and appearances and of course do my first live show!
what problems you solve for your clients and/or what you think sets you apart from others.
Right now, I’m making a lot of fun music. I just got out of a relationship so you know how that goes. These songs are for the girls who like to have a good time and don’t care what other’s think about them. I like to mix in Bangla and Bollywood lyrics and references. I want women, especially Bengali women to be comfortable in their own skin and confident in their decisions. It’s a big thing for me to break away from traditional norms of being a doctor, engineer or lawyer (lol) and to pursue music.
What are you most proud of and what are the main things you want potential clients/followers/fans to know about you/your brand/your work/ etc.
I’m most proud of the visuals I create. There’s a lot of thought and creativity that goes behind this and if you know me I am intentional about the messages you receive from these visuals. I also love being PRETTY RI$KI, I really go by my name which means I’m going to take a risk and look good while doing it!
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Repost, comment, tag, share, put their name in a room full of opportunities. Just SHARE!!! with all of your friends. People take the time to make sure their favorite celebrity is their wallpaper or is the first person to comment on their post — you should do the same for your friends who are striving to be artists or any other creative at that.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I promote myself on every single platform. Even if it has 0 likes. I don’t care, it’s out there and someone is going to view it and maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow but it’s out in the world!
Promote yourself endlessly. No one will go hard for you as much as you go hard for yourself. If you love what you do, you’ll get the results you desire! I learned what my audience reacts to and what keeps them engaged, test out all your ideas and don’t be afraid to put yourself out there for your dreams.
