We recently connected with Pretti Whitty and have shared our conversation below.
Pretti, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
Makeup is my passion and just like anything else, you get out what you put into it. I learned by repetition. It’s the easiest and the hardest thing to do. Sometimes it can be frustrating to put a lot of hours into a project and it not work out. I just remind myself that there’s no way around putting those hours in and a part of that is making mistakes. That’s how I grow as an artist.
Pretti, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started creating content about 3 or 4 years ago. The time is a bit of a blur but it was the start of me really leaning into my creativity. I think in the beginning I was practicing, posting, and learning almost nonstop. Although that wasn’t something that I could do long term, it definitely helped me to get really good really quickly. Those were formative years for me and opened my eyes to the types of art that I was capable of creating. I think the thing that I’m most proud of is my ability to pause and pivot my career and my goals. I’ve been on a bit of a hiatus trying to discover exactly what direction I want to take my career in next. I’m so proud of myself for acknowledging that I needed to take a step back and allowing myself the space to possibly take a new journey.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me the most rewarding part of being a creative is my actual creations. At the end of piling on makeup or paint there’s always a moment where I stand back in awe of what I made. It’s definitely a moment of pure pride and that’s what keeps me creating. That’s the thing that drives me to learn more and really see what I can do.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I think the best thing we can do for creatives is be more supportive and less critical. Shares matter, comments matter, support each other the way we would want others to support us. The best things we can do to support creatives are all free.
