We recently connected with Preston Michael and have shared our conversation below.
Preston , appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
I would definitely say my upcoming album, Colors & Lights, has been the most meaningful project I’ve ever worked on.
Each of the songs on C & L are meaningful to me because they represent how I was seeing the world at different stages of my life. In a way you could say each of them were written with a distinct set of eyes, yet they’re all me.
Beyond the songwriting, producing my own music has also been an intense labor of love and an incredible learning experience. It’s all consuming but definitely a journey worth taking for so many reasons.
Preston , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m pretty determined to be authentic yet relatable. For me, it’s about manifesting my own quirky style while still being commercially available.
I would consider my debut album a gen z’s version of indie rock with retro influences. There’s definitely something or everyone.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
I think society should avoid seeing artists as products for consumption and just appreciate what makes them unique. Let us be imperfect. Give grace to the ones who have found fame and struggled but also take time to support the unknowns.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
As a songwriter, I had to unlearn going about writing with too much of a pre-conceived idea in mind and instead just write from what I’m feeling in the here and now. I have found my best music evolves organically and surprises me in the end.
