We recently connected with Presley Woodall and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Presley, thanks for joining us today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
I get asked about my business name often. You would have to know me personally to get it. Oafie is a nickname of mine. It started out as OAF, in high school. I was screen printing my art work on shirts and OAF was my brand name. After a few years of that, I changed my goals and laid out a plan to be able to incorporate more of my crafty side. That is when I came up with Niftie Oafie and made it an official business.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
The idea behind my business is to bring those creative ideas you have to life. I create a lot of DIY decor for my own home and being the major home body that I am, it’s important to have your space exactly how you want it. What I love most about this journey is that the possibilities are pretty endless as far as what I can help you create. My digital art work has given me the opportunity to create business logos for new business owners. I have captured some very special moments with my photography. My newest venture with woodwork has been the most exciting as I have created some killer pieces I have hanging in my own home and have sold a few pieces at my events. I love it when someone purchases a piece from me that I have created but I love even more to be trusted in creating it all from scratch. The trust in that is motivating and always leaves me feeling proud and happy.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I have learned many lessons on my journey. The one that I have the biggest problem with is selling myself short, in more ways then one. I have sold things for prices I should have charged so much more for. I have had to put my foot down on a lot and have more solid rules like cancelation fees for a photoshoot and fees for order drop offs because life happens and changes prior arrangements. The “homie hook up” is no longer a thing and the right people will have no problem with that. Learning my worth has been a big lesson for me.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Going from just screen printing to a full on business with multiple services to offer was definitely influenced by my personal growth. I started screen printing in 2015 and launched Niftie Oafie in 2021. I picked a lot more mediums in those years and wanted to make it into a business. I rebuilt everything to be able to offer my new skills and it was the best decision I could have made for myself.
