Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Presley Tennant. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Presley, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I was always the shy kid growing up. I never wanted to do anything to put myself in the center of attention and I would always hide behind those around me until I found music. At first it was only singing around the house, then it was karaoke nights at the local Mexican restaurant, to vocal lessons to singing competitions near my hometown then by the age of 13 I was in a girl group called the 5LPs or 5 Little Princesses. I never knew the music industry was a thing. I grew up in a very soccer oriented family so I thought that was what I was going to do for the rest of my life, but once I was in that girl group I knew I was going to be in the music industry. I finally felt like I could be myself and just let go of all the worries and just live in the moment. I loved being on stage, and being around other creatives like myself. I was able to just express myself freely and was taking it all in. At that time I was in school, going to rehearsals in Los Angeles and playing soccer, so I convinced my parents to homeschool me and made the decision to take on music full force. I was all in. It was the best decision I ever made. At 16, I ended up on season 16 of NBCs “The Voice” and now I spend a week out in Nashville once a month writing, & I also get to open up for some of my favorite country artists all the time. I am very fortunate to have the support system I have behind me and to have them back me all these years. It’s always scary starting something new especially when you dive in head first from a young age, but I couldn’t imagine ever doing anything else.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hey! I’m Presley Tennant. I’m a country sing-songwriter from Southern California, more specifically from Norco! I’ve always had a passion for music and got my start to the industry at a very young age. I was 10 years old when I joined a pop-christian girl group called the 5LPs or the 5 Little Princesses.. This is where I knew that I was going to be doing music for the rest of my life. During that girl group, we got to work with some amazing people that I’ve looked up to for so long including the Jacksons & Kelly Rowland from Destiny’s Child. The group ended when I was about 13 and I continued on my solo career. I was up in Los Angeles almost 5 days a week rehearsing, writing, and playing as much I could… On average about 2-5 times a weekend. I continued this til I was 16 where I landed a spot on season 16 NBCs “The Voice” with Kelly Clarkson as my coach. That was seriously a dream come true in my life. I had the most incredible experience on that show. I met so many incredible artists that I still am so close with to this day as well as got to work with one of my idols. Right before I joined the show, I felt like I was going through this inner battle. I felt like I wasn’t being entirely true to myself through my music. I was always told if you want to do music, you gotta be happy so I did a little bit of soul-searching during that time. I feel like I went back to my roots. Growing up in Norco, I was always surrounded by country music so when I even turned my head in that direction, I felt like it was calling my name. It sounds cheesy to say this, but I know this is exactly where I’m supposed to be at. I’ve gotten to make music that I love and don’t feel like I have to be anything else but myself. I’ve opened up for so many respectable names in the country music industry such as Tim McGraw, Blake Shelton, Cody Johnson, Brett Young, Cole Swindell, Carly Pearce, and so many more that I wouldn’t ever believe I’d be saying right now.
People can expect SO MUCH new music soon. I’ve been working with hit songwriters out in Nashville & I am so excited for these new songs to be out for everyone to hear. It’s definitely different from my previous work but as I get older, I just want to keep growing and maturing and thats 100% shown in my music.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I started building my social media up when I was around 13 years old. At first it started with stupid videos just messing around and then they started to get some traction, so I tried to think of how I could capitalize on it for my music. I started posting cover videos all the time on TikTok or what is was then, Musical.ly. I’ve learned with social media you want to think outside of the box or not what you’d normally see, but also you don’t want to put too much thought into it because then it can seem forced, but as long as it’s you, you really can’t go wrong.. An example I could share, is Zach Bryan released his song “Something In the Orange” and I fell in love with it, but every time I heard it, I couldn’t help but what wonder what the girl’s perspective would be.. So I reimagined the song from the girl’s perspective and posted the chorus to TikTok. It blew up out of nowhere. I was just putting it out there cause I like how it turned out, but never in a million years would I think I’d re-write the whole song and release, but I did just that.. It’s done so well and I can’t believe it all started like a 30 second video.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
This may be so obvious, but I think the best thing society could do in terms in supporting artists or creatives is to continue streaming songs or interacting whether it’s online or in person. If it’s online I mean commenting, engaging or just simply staying connected, or if there’s a show or concert then to try to make it a point to see them live.
