We recently connected with Premimathieu Sterlin and have shared our conversation below.
Premimathieu , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s go back in time a bit – can you share a story of a time when you learned an important lesson during your education?
Personally, I think around the age of 15-16 (Sophomore/Junior) yeah of high school I realized school is not always needed. I spent the majority of my life in school learning and pushing myself because I thought it was the only way to be successful in life. I dropped out of high school in my senior year, because I felt that if I wasn’t going to play pro basketball that there was no point in continuing my education mostly because I didn’t feel like I was being taught anything I needed to know. My generation was the first to be introduced to the internet and it is one of the greatest tools ever created. Everything I do for work now I learned via YouTube and googling. I didn’t end up, getting my diploma online years later and going to college for a few semesters but it did nothing but solidify my initial thought that I didn’t need the schooling at that point. I work in a field where your work speaks for you not your education or amount of diplomas luckily. I don’t say this to discourage people from going to school but only so they can understand maybe school isn’t for you and maybe what you want to do in life wont require it. I’m blessed to have a career where i can continue to educate myself and not need the schooling, especially in a time where its so expensive. Its important to always push yourself to be great, no one else can do that for you.
Premimathieu , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
PremiSterlin.com is where you can see all my work. I specialize in Graphic Design, Photography, Videography, and Music Production. I started in the media production making beats for myself because at some point in my life I wanted to be a rapper but beats were too expensive for me at the time. This lead to me creating my own cover art, shooting my own music videos, taking my own photos, and editing them. Throughout my time doing this I learned so much and continued to get better to the point other artist wanted to hire me and from there it started. A full career in media production, just from constantly working on my own art. I would have to say the thing about this that Im most proud of is that during the beginnings of this I never thought I would be as successful as I am in this field, all I did know is that I will be successful in life. I continued to learn and push myself to get to the point I am now.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
Funding a business is hard, especially when you do multiple different things. My number one rule was, if I purchase this can I make my money back off of it and more? For example, when I purchased my first camera for $1000 from a friend of mine who was like a sister to us named Aube. I told my self I will be able to make this money back within a couple months of using it. I did the same when I purchased my latest computer that we built. I spent the money to get all the parts and made sure that this is not only a purchase but an investment.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Talk to people, use social media, be approachable. For a long time I did not like talking to people or having conversations, it just wasnt me. Earlier in my business I collaborated with a friend of mine named Ian Mann, I would have him talk to the clients while I figured out the number portions because I just really disliked interacting with other people. I slowly learned that word of mouth is the best way to secure more clients and social media is second. I started going out more and networking with others so I could get more comfortable in spaces in talk with people, essentially increasing my clientele.
