Hi Premier Doulas of Houston, thanks for joining us today. What’s the best advice you ever gave to a client? How did they benefit / what was the result? (Please note this response is for education/entertainment purposes only and shouldn’t be construed as advice for the reader)
We strongly recommend to all of our clients that they truly take the time to interview and select the best people for their support team. Including your provider! So many people do not realize that they can make appointments with their prospective doctors and midwives to see if your goals align with theirs. What is their outlook on birth? Do they require their patients to be induced by a specific week? Do they ask for consent before touching you?
Each person is so different and you should have individualized care. So don’t feel guilty or feel like you’re wasting your provider’s time. You’re worthy of respectful care!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
We are a collective of 6 trained and experienced doulas here to help our clients find the answers that they’re looking for during pregnancy, birth, and beyond. We have modern solutions to the age-old questions new parents have always had. We believe pregnancy, birth, and parenthood is beautiful, and we also know that having help and support along the way is necessary.
Our doulas are trained for fertility, from the basics of learning about tracking menstrual cycles to find their most fertile days to conceive, to helping find new paths when science and technology are required to conceive.
We are all trained as labor support, with evidence based knowledge and skills to help birthing people cope with labor and delivery for whatever type of birth wanted. Home birth, birth center, hospital, epidural or not, planned cesarean, hypnosis, or multiples, we will help educate and prepare people for the birth they are planning for, then will be there to squeeze their hips, get another drink of water, and support them until the baby arrives.
Our postpartum doulas have modern, evidence based, time tested, and safe solutions for parenting newborns. We will be there as an extra set of hands, a pair of listening ears, and a caretaker to parent the parent on those days and nights that blend into one another in those early months after birth and bringing the baby home.
We recognize the systemic oppression, discrimination, and marginalization that many families face as they seek a safe birth experience. We believe that all families and parents deserve respect, autonomy, and safety in their birthing space.
Beyond being doulas, we are all friends. We all support each other, laugh together, cry together, share new and old knowledge, and back each other up.
How’d you meet your business partner?
We’ve all been brought together over our years of experience working as doulas. Kelley, Vero, Alex, and Eleanor met over coffee at a local doula meet up. Keri and Alex had been working together over many years doing postpartum support. And Eleanor was Angel’s doula! When we got together it was such a seamless fit. Not only do we dedicate 110% to our clients but we’re the closest friends. So it was only natural we would choose to create a doula collective where each person could provide their own unique method of support so all of our clients can benefit.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
One lesson we had to unlearn is that you can do everything on your own. We all had been working our own individual businesses over the years but when we came together we were able to share the load. All of our clients benefit from having back up doulas, we can refer to each other for other pregnancy support needs and even postpartum care after baby arrives. Our clients feel like they don’t have to search all around for the perfect support team and we can rest knowing our clients are in the best hands.
