Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Prema Shakti. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Prema, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you share an anecdote or story from your schooling/training that you feel illustrates what the overall experience was like?
For four years I studied Ayurvedic Medicine at Alandi Ashram & Ayurveda Clinic in Boulder, CO. I was completely immersed in all aspects of Ayurveda training and Ashram living. From spiritual ceremonies to seeing patients in our low-income targeted clinic, I was honored to study under my guru, Alakanada Ma. This is where I received my spiritual name in the lineage of the Amethyst of the Heart. It was an honor to receive the name Prema Shakti, which can be translated to “Love Power”.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I learned of Ayurvedic Medicine through Yoga, as they are sister sciences. My interest was piqued, particularly after a period of 5 years working in the finance industry and feeling burnt out and unfulfilled. I immediately dove into this “new” trade and became an Ayurvedic Practitioner in 2014. Since then I have gone on to study as an Ayurvedic Doctor.
Ayurveda is a traditional Indian system of medicine focusing on preventative healthcare, detoxification, rejuvenation and longevity. Native to India, Ayurveda means, Ayu – “life” and Veda – “knowledge or science”, so it can be interpreted as the “science of life”. Ayurveda is mankind’s oldest healing system, dating back beyond 5,000 years, using diet, lifestyle, herbal medicines, bodywork therapies, gemstones, yoga, meditation and esoteric practices to maintain physical, mental, emotional and spiritual balance. I work with patients on any ailment where western medicine has failed them, and/or as a preventative measure for health and well-being.
One area in particular that I specialize in is Ayurveda for addictions (www.ayurvedaforaddiction.com). Ayurveda believes that addiction to alcohol or drugs is created due to an imbalance of their constitution that the individual believes is being addressed through the use of an outside stimulus, when in fact these substances are simply furthering these imbalances. The goal of Ayurveda is to address these imbalances and to give the individual the tools to handle stressors without the use of drugs or alcohol.
Ayurveda is a complementary modality to western medicine and they should be integrated together for optimal health.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
In the world of healthcare it is common for time with your doctor to be extremely limited. Much of the time you may only get a 5 minute window when visiting your PCP.
One of the things that I respect about eastern medicine is the attentiveness that comes along with patient care. I value listening to my patients to get to the root of their ailments. In Ayurveda, we believe that every individual is unique, and how a disease is treated is also unique to the individual. It is within those unique nuances where successes arise. Having a deeper understanding of the individual in front of me is important to helping them achieve their goals.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
In my field of work, it is referrals that are the largest generator of business. When something works, you want to tell your friends and family about it. Ayurveda is a safe and effective healthcare modality.
Yoga is another way that many people become exposed to Ayurveda, since they are sister sciences. We use Yoga as a tool of wellness in Ayurveda, but our range expands far beyond the branch of Yoga wellness.
Since Ayurveda is relatively new to the USA, educational awareness of its existence is important. Many people have never heard of Ayurveda and don’t know that it is available to them. As a practitioner and student of this ancient eastern system of medicine I am often in the role of teacher to spread awareness for Ayurveda as a holistic healthcare system.
