Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Prejon Henderson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Prejon, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
Ive always been a person to speak things into existence and I have really been big on manifestation. I used to make music for fun and focused only on turn up music that was meant for partying. It took me getting strange looks at a showcase one time for one of my more ratchet songs to realize my gift is bigger than what I desire and what I felt the industry calls cool. I realized that I have a gift and my gift can inspire others to go big at what they believe in. Immediately I started making music that spoke to accomplishing goals and working hard to achieve the life you want. I also wanted to make music my family could relate to and enjoy for future generations to come. I begin putting empowering messages in my music that could make people cry when listening and provided a sense of hope during tough times. My music now uplifts people and I thought it was only right to release a project that guided believers into my same spirit of manifestation. The project is called “DREAMS COME TRUE” and it’s a soundtrack to what is currently going on in my life. Since relocating to Los Angeles with the help of God Ive been able to push my music further than ever before with multiple radio and movie placements, a billboard in Times Square NYC, and my first million streams on a single project! Ive also been booking commercials which brings another element to my entertainment career and fanbase reach. My fans and family are seeing my movement in a positive light now which they can embrace and it’s inspiring them to go for their dreams as well. Our gift has healing in it and by understanding the purpose in which we create you can truly help others along the way. My saying is purpose over clout and my project “DREAMS COME TRUE” defines that perfectly.
Prejon, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
As a singer-songwriter I have always love creating soulful harmonies even as a young kid way back in Sunday school at church. A group of us kids from the neighborhood would write songs together and perform them at church. This helped me develop a love for music and performing early on. Without realizing it at first this was the foundation in which I follow now when creating music. I can come up with lyrics and melodies very easily by playing an instrumental or even by just thinking about a topic. Music has always been therapeutic for me to create as well as listen to so my influences range from Bob Marley to Tupac and Kirk Franklin to Usher…the list can go on but those are a few. The thing that people usually don’t realize is the passion and commitment it takes to be an independent artist. I’ve noticed that it takes a lot of heart and bravery when being your most creative self. Doing something you enjoy that others may not understand is very challenging. You really have to define why you are doing something to truly enjoy it! My goal is to always be able to define my “why” and never allow anyone’s opinion derail me from my purpose. Music is my therapy and It connects the people I love the most!
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to show others as well as myself that there is a place in this world for your creativity. Our talents can be appreciated and the ability to create something for yourself will always be greater than what society has already designed for you. There is libration in creativity and when you tap into the right sources the opportunities are unlimited. Even at times when you don’t get the same respect as celebrity artists or even other people within the entertainment industry you have to remember why you do what you do. The WHY is even more important than the art itself at times. Ive come to notice there is a stigma that if you can’t bring other entities value based on their defiition then you yourself are not valuable. This mindset is way to common in many parts of the entertainment industry around the world and at times can be very damaging to the creative’s confidence and overall purpose. You can lose focus as a creative and stray away from your purpose trying to align yourself with the expectation of others. Over the years Ive become very intentional with my focus and purpose behind the reason why I create and that’s had fueled my creative journey more than anyone’s expectations of me every will.
How did you build your audience on social media?
When I entered the music industry you really had to get out in the streets and find a way to connect with potential fans. The internet was available however it didn’t allow you to connect with people as well as it does now. Before every performance I would go to Walmart and buy a pack of 100 cds which took me a few days to burn and package up to get ready to hand out. I wouldn’t charge for the CDs because I felt it was a gift to those who appreciated my performance. This really helped create a buzz around the city and also helped me see that there is value in believing in myself. By doing this I would not only get my music out to people directly but also created a fanbase that appreciated and respected my movement. I quickly realized that creating music wasn’t cheap and the only way I could continue to grow as a creator is to start looking at things through a business lens. I started working multiple jobs to afford more studio time and took the money I saved to create an official project called “Got Hooks Vol 1” This project had 20 tracks with a featured artist on majority of the songs and really allowed me to expand my audience not only in my city but around the world. I begin shipping CDs out of the country and to cities around the US. It was a project that truly showed me I have something special and the love I received in person translated to social media in the years to come. I feel as a creator you will always have to rethink your approach and find the most effective ways to connect with your audience. It makes it all worth it when you get feedback from a fan saying they love what you are doing and to keep it up! it means even more coming from those you love!
