We recently connected with Precious Foreman and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Precious thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I first knew that I wanted to pursue a creative path professionally in 2021 when I started submitting acting auditions. For a long time, I loved to act but mainly did it as a hobby. However, my dream was to become a big star and after I had been signed, it gave me more opportunities to go after getting roles in films and TV shows. That’s when I started to see my interests become a career.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Precious Foreman, and I am a teen poet, actress, filmmaker, and broadcast journalist from Southern Maryland. I’m also the 2023 Youth Poet Laureate for Prince George’s County, Maryland.
I started my journey performing and modeling at local events. My older sisters had already started modeling during fashion shows at our church, so my mom decided to get me involved when she realized how much I loved dressing up. I was around three, and the first event I did was a beauty pageant. Growing up, I loved performing but was always open to trying new art forms.
Currently, I’m focusing on a lot of social justice issues in media. I love to write about my emotions and I also like to be experimental. My creativity and open mindset make me unique as an artist. I enjoy working with others to see what we can create building upon one another’s ideas. Right now, I’m most proud of my title as the Youth Poet Laureate in my area. This experience has developed me a lot as a writer because I’ve had many opportunities to read my poetry. The doors that the platform has opened for me have created the space for me to grow as a person because when I improve my writing, I improve my communication skills, and myself overall.
Poetry is very important for this generation because we need an outlet for expression. My goal is that by sharing my poetry and spoken word, other people can feel seen or understood and understand myself better. Poetry is about connection to yourself, your emotions, and other people.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I want to use art and the media to contribute to the well-being of others. Life is too precious to go without enjoyment and connection, so I aim to provide that in what I create.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Personally, the most rewarding part of being a creative is the people I’m able to meet and work with. I love to be around artists and to see how my family, friends, and sometimes complete strangers receive my own art. As a journalist, I really enjoy conducting interviews with others to learn more about their stories. Overall, the people that I’ve met during my journey as an artist have been the most rewarding aspect because sharing these experiences makes me feel most fulfilled.
