Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Powers And The People. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Powers and, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
We’re still finding our footing in that respect and all have 9-5 jobs. Of course we would love for this band to turn into something that resembles a career and right now we’re focused on building an audience so that we can get more people at our shows. I think all of us have different perspectives on what success looks like in the long term, but we’re mainly concerned right now with maintaining consistent and stable growth, both on a band level and as individuals. It’s definitely challenging, working a full time job and playing music though. A good chunk of our free time goes to the band as you’d maybe expect, but it’s worth it.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hi! We’re a five piece kinda indie rock band that formed in the fall of 2022. Most of us moved to Nashville with the desire to orbit the world of music in whatever form that could take, and we bonded over certain shared creative sensibilities. So far we’ve been focused on getting music released and trying to slowly build a following. Recently we just got to record at Blackbird Studios and are super proud of our latest batch of songs we cut there. One of which, Cliche, has just been released at the time this is being written. We’re also super proud of the loyal fans we’ve cultivated and connected with. They may be small in number right now but their enthusiasm has been super encouraging.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
I think it’s a challenge just finding the time daily for the creative process. It goes back and forth between being joyously enticing and laboriously demanding. It’s hard finding time to write or practice your instrument daily and sometimes even when you want to do it, it can still feel like a chore. At the same time, it feels like a compulsion, like something you just have to do. I think that’s why we’re all musicians in the first place.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Financial betterment. Just kidding, I think most bands are in the constant process of discovering and re-discovering their sound. Ours’ is pretty eclectic to begin with and as a result I think we are very much in the process of figuring out what kind of music we want to be making and what in our creative DNA is integral to us as a band. We all love music and listen to various genres and styles, so as we see it, it’s limiting to put ourselves in a box.
