We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Portia Hambrick a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Portia, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s talk about social media – do you manage your own or do you have someone or a company that handles it for you? Why did you make the choice you did?
I manage my own social media. I take classes from time to time and look up different tips for ways to grow my Instagram. I’ll also speak with other people in my industry to see what tips they might want to share.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am in the modeling industry. It started as me just loving to be in front of the camera and taking pictures, but with COVID I decided to branch out and start modeling professionally. Dallas does have a lot of models, but I like to separate myself from others by showing off my consistency, dedication, and creativity. I’m most proud of the person growth I’ve experienced while becoming a model. I’ve learned to be more vocal and be more assertive which is something I struggled with from time to time.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I built my social media greatly since I’ve started model and I am still in the process of learning new tips everyday. I would recommend to just stay consistent with posting quality work. You do not have to post everyday, but I do recommend to at least be active everyday. The more you post the more you grow. I would also recommend to follow whatever trends are currently popular. That will definitely help!
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to learn to smile more when modeling. When I thought of model, I assumed it was the “serious-face” look that people wanted. But during my shoots the photographer or I would say something funny to make me laugh and the photographer would compliment me and encourage me to smile more. Sometimes I do forget because it was something I tried to avoid for a while, but Im getting better at it and it is helping with my pictures!
