We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Portia Aofiyebi . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Portia below.
Portia, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
I have always enjoyed baking and cooking for others. It is a way to express myself and share my heart. I believe food connects us and creates beautiful memories in life. My mission is to be part of the special moments people enjoy each day.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
From childhood, I have enjoyed preparing food as a way of creative expression and service. I started my business with a Cottage Food Permit which allows me to operate from home. As, I am a fulltime employee for a nonprofit, Sweets by Portia is still my side hustle. To build exposure I sell desserts at farmers markets, pop up shops, and local events. Thankfully, I have also had much support from those in my community. My greater vision is to grow beyond the home business with a food truck and or storefront.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
The first wedding cake I did on my own was one of the most challenging, yet rewarding experiences. It was very stressful and overwhelming and in hindsight I should have asked for help, lol. However, receiving positive feedback from the couple was such an amazing feeling. It showed me what’s possible when I stretch myself.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I am so thankful to have interns who help with social media. They are great college students who are full of creativity, knowledge, and zeal. I would reccomend getting help from people who excel in social media, but may want experience. It is a great way to go when saving costs and growing.
