Porsha, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you scale up? What were the strategies, tactics, meaningful moments, twists/turns, obstacles, mistakes along the way? The world needs to hear more realistic, actionable stories about this critical part of the business building journey. Tell us your scaling up story – bring us along so we can understand what it was like making the decisions you had, implementing the strategies/tactics etc.
My original business was baking cakes from my home. As that became lucrative, I took my talents to teaching cake decorating classes. As that was local for a few years, I decided to elevate by traveling the US and then Internationally teaching hands on cake classes. Once I got that under my belt, I started a new venture in the cake industry by creating a line of flavoring elixirs for bakers to use in their desserts.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My grandmother has always been in the kitchen. I am from West Texas, from a small community was like an extended family. Everyone looked out for one another as a family would, and my grandmother always gave the gift of food. Growing up, I learned that food put a smile on people’s faces. As I moved to Arlington, TX to attend UTA to obtain my degree and finished college, I began taking decorating classes at the local craft store to learn how to decorate cakes. As I finished the last course, the instructor asked me to become an instructor. As time went on I taught cake decorating class but had never baked cakes for anyone due to not having any family living close to me. Then, I lost my corporate job and began to push myself to make cakes for the public.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Being on The Food Network definitely turns my business around on Instagram. It created another part of my business that turned into me teaching classes. The television show helped me showcase my talents to others.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Pivoting from baking cakes to now being a brand that sells a different type of product is eye opening. I’m now selling myself in a different way.
