We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Porsha Davis a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Porsha, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
Omg!!! I have so many meaningful projects that I’ve done within my styling career as a wardrobe stylist. I would have to say one of my meaningful projects was working with the singer Nivea when she was in Chicago for business. She has such a beautiful story and come on it’s Nivea that sings “Laundromat, 25 reasons, and complicated” to name a few. It was a special project for me because I was over everything glam not just wardrobe. Chicago has some amazing talented people that I added to the team such as a makeup artist, hairstylist, and nail tech which they all did the damn thing. That project taught me so much about myself as an individual in a sense of I honestly wear many hats. Not only do I wear many hats but I wear them all well even under pressure and we all know pressure makes diamonds.
Another meaningful project I’m currently working on right now is my women’s contemporary clothing brand. I finally stepped into my fashion designing hat last year and been so excited ever since. My brand is for all women to feel fully confident and fashionably dangerous. Just going through the process of sketching, sourcing fabrics, finding the perfect manufacturer, and the creative direction journey is all beautiful yet stressful at the same time. I can’t wait to release to the world soon my brand. Stay Tuned!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
It all started back in 2014 when I was a fashion blogger and where I’m from at the time nobody was doing blogging (it wasn’t a thing). After blogging for two years consistently I started to receive comments to my blog posts and on social media about styling. I always had a creative eye for fashion since a little girl honestly. I would see my mom with all her clothes, jewelry, bags, furs, and more. It was all apart of the process of birthing “Porsha Styles”. After receiving so many comments from social media and my blog posts I started styling right away. I would do all my looks on fashion app back then but as time when on my brand revamped a few times to stay professional as well as current. I literally learned everything through trial and error on my own (no handbook or handouts).
I had my first client back in 2016 which was Brittish Williams from Basketball wives. I created looks for her for NYC fashion week and different appearances she had at that time. I had the pleasure to work with the brand Milano Di Rouge on styling Brittish for appearance event (I’m forever grateful for the opportunity). After working with her many doors begin to open for me and your girl was booked & busy. Fast forward to 2018 I had my first daughter and focused on my pregnancy as well as branding at the time. After having my daughter I was in business revamp mode and did a photoshoot months later to prepare for my launch.
After that launch it’s been history ever since from my everyday clients to my high end clients I have remained booked & busy. Now my portfolio has enlarge so much over the years with different clients in different industries. I got to where I am today by hard-work, dedication, commitment, laying the foundation, doing the ground work, and never giving up.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Yes, there has always been a mission driving my creative journey and it’s very simple. The mission for me is to always stay true to who I am as a wardrobe stylist and keep myself fresh in new ideas always when it comes to fashion.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is seeing my visions for my clients come to life when they showcase the looks that I’ve styled them in. It makes my heart smile seeing my work on my clients (love receiving photos and tags with their looks). I be like “WOW, I did that and you look absolutely stunning”.
