Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Porsché Mysticque Steele. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Porsché Mysticque, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
My life began just 5 years ago when I took the biggest risk of my life. I moved to Nigeria from California to see a man I’d never met in person.
I spent my teen and early adulthood in a cult-like environment at the hands of my father. Unable to date, work, go to college, or even browse the internet freely, life was like a prison. Battling sexual and emotional abuse it was all becoming too much to bear until I decided to risk my wellbeing and venture online while the rest of the house was asleep. It was in those ventures that I found two things, my career and the love of my life. It was in 2014 when I began speaking to a man from Nigeria regularly. I also would find myself on writer sites like Goodreads and Wattpad where I read unpublished works by amazing writers. Unfortunately, those unpublished works were usually riddled with errors and so, to continue to escape my home life, I began editing those works and sending them clean and polished to the authors. Going back and forth between the stories and the man I was quickly falling for, I found my sliver of happiness. After dating online for several years, he eventually suggested that I begin charging for my editing work, and I agreed. I created a profile on Upwork in 2018 and earned just over $14,000 through freelance editing.
In 2019, everything came to a head. I was head over heels in love and yet still trapped in oppression. My older sister, who was also experiencing the abuse decided enough was enough. She gave me a choice… either she and I escape together or I wake up to find she’d taken her own life.
The choice was a no-brainer. We had a sizeable nest egg and I had a man waiting for me on the outside.
On July 11th, 2019, my sister and I escaped at 3:00 in the morning with nothing but what we could carry.
By September 20th, 2019, I’d traveled to Nigeria to see the man I was dating for 5 years. I knew it was a risk, but nothing was riskier than escaping my father’s prison.
Luckily, when I arrived in Nigeria, the man proposed to me, I said yes, and we married 3 months later.
My husband and I have been soulmates ever since. While living my new life in Nigeria, I turned my freelancing into a publishing company, which I grew to 6-figures in its first year. Since then, I’ve worked with over 100 authors to produce high-quality books that will shape the lives of their readers just as books have done for me.

Porsché Mysticque, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I own MysticqueRose Publishing where we produce books for business owners who are becoming independent authors. We handle editing, cover design, formatting, publishing guidance, book launch services, and book marketing.
I am also an award-winning book coach and I specialize in helping business owners create best-selling book ideas for their business and their thought leadership. I assist with the ideation, outlining, publishing path, launch and marketing strategies, and more.
I’ve created the 5-figure book launch method that guarantees each book published produces at least 5 figures in revenue.
I’ve also created the 5-figure book tour method to help authors who want to have profitable book tours.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
When I first started MysticqueRose, I was working on books of all genres; children’s books, sci/fantasy, self-help, and even cookbooks. Though I had great success when I began, it became increasingly frustrating. I found myself having numerous sales calls with writers who only desired to be an author because they wanted to write. I was having more and more conversations with people who didn’t desire to impact the world with their stories nor did they recognize that a successful book requires the author to publish their book with a business mindset.
While I understand the passion, as I myself burned with the same energy, this way of thinking would ensure that the author’s work never got the recognition it may have deserved.
Eventually, I grew weary of the sales calls and the stunted view of the industry. I decided to pivot and to work with business owners exclusively.
It dawned on me that the type of people who would put in the work to give their powerful books a fair chance on the market and generate real impact in the world at the same time were entrepreneurs and coaches; people who owned their own businesses.
Not only did this pivot allow me to work with people with whom I more closely aligned, but it also made it easier to find my ideal client and offer services that mattered to them.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I’m quite the minority in my industry. As a young black woman in high-end independent publishing, I often find myself in spaces where the majority of the people beside me are older white men and women. This has allowed me to immediately capture the attention of my peers, competitors, and potential clients.
However, I am also quite vocal and I gravitate toward conversations and spaces that challenge the status quo. In the independent publishing industry, trends, data, and the market as a whole often dictate how a book should be received by the audience. Keeping myself abreast of industry ongoings, I find gaps and holes in the logic presented and challenge them… very publicly.
This disruption has unintentionally become a part of my personal brand and the foundation for my thought leadership. With this, I continue to speak on subjects related to publishing and produce books in ways that many do not.
All of this has had a hand in helping to build my reputation.
