We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Porscha Johnson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Porscha, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Alright, so you had your idea and then what happened? Can you walk us through the story of how you went from just an idea to executing on the idea
For my project management business, it actually came out of job application fatigue. I had been working for an amazing company and was unexpectedly laid off early this year. I had survived tough job markets in the tech industry before, so I naively thought after a 1-3 months I would be fine and land on my feet. After over 500 applications, I just had this gut feeling something had to change so I decided to focus on short term contracts within my skill set. I signed up for a 3rd party platform called Upwork and within 1 month I secured my first client and it’s been off the races ever since.
For my corporate financial wellness business, I started out helping friends and family with understanding how to use their money as a tool to live the life they desired. I then started working with clients 1:1 where I had success. However, I kept having a desire for more impact and that is when I decided to pivot to the corporate space to have more visibility to people of all socio economic backgrounds and to have my message of financial alignment reach the masses.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a person who thrives on adding value to clients by bringing organization and strategy to chaos. I help founders and organizations get unstuck, reduce costs, and most importantly scope creep on their projects. What sets me apart from most project managers is that I started out as a software developer, so I have the skillset to understand and communication technical challenges and solutions to nontechnical teams.
When it comes to my corporate financial wellness business as a Reiki Practitioner, and Accredited Financial Counselor candidate, I am really passionate about the intersection of holistic wellness practices and financial therapy, coaching to really help people jump start designing their most ideal lifestyle. Often times your relationship with money is a direct reflection of your relationship with yourself. My goal is to serve clients in an empathetic way on their journey toward unpacking their beliefs and relationship with money so they can become more financially confident decision makers.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best source of new clients has honestly been investing in in person and online relationships. I am creating an eco system of friends and referral sources that I genuinely care about and we have common interests as well. I am also intentional to check in our my network, offer support in any way I can.
I would say to start with finding like minded people and grow organic relationships with them. It takes time but continue to sow those seeds into the relationship. That’s exactly what happened with a group I co-organize called Atlanta Soloprenuers. We are a group of freelancers and solopreneurs, we have events, meet weekly and are all focused on growing our community, learning, and having some fun along the way.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
For my Project Management business, I would say my extensive experience working in the Atlanta Tech start up space across multiple industries ( IOT, Cannabis, Fintech). Each start up, I stretched myself and learned so much about how projects should and should not be run to ensure value is added to your external and internal stakeholders.
Within my Corporate Wellness business, I would say being consistent on my weekly thought leadership posts on linkedin has been a game changer. Linkedin is where a lot of my target market ( employee benefits, people operations, human resource) tend to spend their time. In my weekly post, I share value on my areas of expertise and share a call to action for those interested in my services as well.
