We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Poppito a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Poppito, thanks for joining us today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
They were the influence behind me finding my own relationship with the creator. Despite being adopted 3 times; With the most high’s wisdom and mercy I was able to honor my parents and make amends in my own life. Ultimately, I was blessed to find the most high at a young age and build a strong bond and high level of faith in his word, will, and way.
Poppito, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m an artist to the atoms! I’ve only ever done stage work since I left college 1st semester of freshman year. I was singing and dancing for my family before I could ride a bike! I was the kid in the family known for all the dancing and singing at the family events. I grew up in and around church. I got into music professionally through my start at Reaction Band fresh out of HS. The disciplines I gained are huge in terms of numbers but to speak to the root of the word I would say that it was a task to discipline myself with punctuality and time. I was a huge “”I’ll be there 15 mins late” person; resulting in me losing my share of paydays and or taking shorts because I wasn’t on time. It’s not a simple matter but once you pray and align yourself with the most high you get so much more clarity and you can move forward with your mind at ease knowing your prayers are heard and your blessings are coming. Discipline is the foundation stone of success and building. What sets me apart from others is that my music is my testimony. What I do in that lab is the closest thing you have to a modern day Jean-Michel Basquiat, Henry Ossawa Tanner, or even Horace Pippin. Have you ever listened to a song so relatable and resonant that you see the world through music playing in your head phones? Poppito has an identity to his voice and music that is uniquely contagious and satiating on a plethora of levels; Including but not limited to his styles, genres and themes! Let’s also be as clear as possible when we say that 80% of the music is freestyled right in the session he’s in! He’s not a gimmick, not a hoax, he has no wool for your eyes!
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Resonating with you and the viewers in a golden hued aura that synchronizes with your soul and life and taste.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I have had a few managers in my career and I had to bounce back a few times from crucial set backs like losing an entire catalog not once but 3 times. None of which were enough to make me want to give up on my commitment to YHWH and myself
