Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Pook Hustle. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Pook, appreciate you joining us today. Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
Yes and no. I love writing and creating new work but due to gentrification along with the changing of social media algorithms, there’s not many safe public spaces to congregate in Brooklyn. It’s tough but the bright side is that I’ve prioritized building connections with my peers. Miraculous things are already happening because of that initiative.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hey guys, my name is Pook Hustle and I’m a Hip-Hop artist mostly known for my baritone voice, dynamic stage presence, & playful personality. As one of five brothers growing up in a bustling Brooklyn household during the 90s and 2000s, I draw inspiration from the nostalgia of my childhood. Anime, wrestling, Hip-Hop, Gospel, alternative rock & Neo-Soul served as a backdrop to my adolescent experience; later swaying me from basketball, into the music industry. My sound is informed by artists such as 50 Cent, Lauryn Hill, Fall Out Boy & Pharrell.
My most recent album, “Hustle Mode” is an experiment that displays my versatility as an artist. It combines my signature, classic rap delivery over modern “trap” infused production. What I’m most proud of right now is my upcoming collaborative EP with Jamaican-born singer, producer & DJ “KHAJE”. It’s called Clearing Space. It’s 5 tracks crafted from the ambition of striving to get rid of thought patterns, habits and behaviors that no longer serve us, clearing space for our heart’s true desires.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Self-actualization. There’s greatness inside of me and I have to bring it forth into the world as frequently as possible. The more I make it so for me, the more I can guide and speak life into others. I believe everyone has greatness in them, yet many of us never get back up after life beats us down. I’m creating a legacy to inspire people and show them that if they’re willing to Hustle to reach their potential, anything is possible.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative for me has been the relationships I’ve gained over the years. Whether creating together or having conversations, I feel loved, appreciated and challenged to grow. It’s a true blessing. I’m grateful for the likes of Ariel Mercado, Will Porter (Canvas Killer), Biz, Shellzbk and so many others.
