Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Pooja Sethiya. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Pooja, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
I have been doing makeup for last ten years now & this is my full time job. Initially it wasn’t easy to find clients but being consistent is very important. I was living with my parents so I didn’t have to worry about making month to month which I feel helped me take this career path. One of the major steps would be focusing more on my social media and being out there would have definitely helped me speed the process but never the less at this point in my life, I live on my own, make a full time living with my creative career.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a professional makeup artist with over 10 years of experience. My versatility as an artist makes me unique. I specialise in beauty, bridal, prosthetic & SFX makeup. I can create characters with the help of makeup. With the use of special Effects makeup and prosthetics I can reproduce wounds that look realistic, deformities, wrinkles or even supernatural features. With SFX makeup techniques I can give any character a more dramatic look. I have experience of working on sets in India and LA as well. I have been featured in magazine like vogue, Elle and Femina. This year i worked with the academy & also did my first feature film in the US. Looking forward to many more movies coming my way!
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
In my earlier days when I was a makeup artist in india, my job was frowned upon & according to educated families this was just a hobby but no one really took my job seriously. I always knew this is something that makes me happy & I never gave up on my dreams. It took me 2 years to convince my parents about how serious I was to come study at a makeup school in LA & when I look back at my journey that’s the best thing that happened to me. Moving to a different country to pursue my passion has made me more focused & independent.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal for the coming year is to do more feature films. More work that’s challenging and fun than just the usual stuff.
