We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Polo Stoner a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Polo, thanks for joining us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I started off being a rap artist, just being around other creators such as designers, directors, hanging out and getting to know the people behind the scenes. I always wanted to express myself through other forms of art they really motivated me to come out my shell.. I learned everything watching YouTube tutorials and getting hands on with a few other editors in the city. Everything is almost the same formula from working on graphic designs to playing around with different visual effects, it’s super fun but could be stressful sometimes. Being a rapper I was nervous on switching lanes and marketing myself as a creative director and other things, if I didn’t think so much that would have sped up my process, but I think, a lot …haha. Just really overthinking stuff was my only obstacle, but each day im breaking out, teaching myself new things, and really getting to know this new me. I enjoy the process.
Polo, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am Director Polo Stoner. I grew up in the heart of Music City and faced many obstacles finding myself and what I really wanted to do in the industry, whatever really makes me happy. It started by taking baby steps, playing different roles on the team, and staying true to myself. I am a music video director, graphic designer, and visual effects specialist. I can provide anything an artist needs in any creative lane. What I feel sets me apart from others is the further actions I take to help bring my clients vision to life, I come with the whole package. Im proud that I got out my head and started taking action because it can be a roller coaster dealing with depression, a topic I speak on a lot, knowing many creators fight this same battle, im proud im still here, still pushing with you all.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I went through a lot on this journey, fought many battles and suffered. Growing up not knowing any family I built one through close friends, who been my supportive system and without them I wouldn’t been able to push, honestly. I got a goal to bless every single hand who blessed me,
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
In 2020 I lost a lot in writing music but never lost the love of music. I still wanted to be around it, help other artists, and mostly be behind the scenes. I went from being in-front of the cameras all the time to being behind them.
