We were lucky to catch up with Polo Baybee recently and have shared our conversation below.
Polo, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
Yes, I’m very much happy as a music artist No, I haven’t really thought bout what it would be like to have a regular job in a long time. The last time I actually thought about that was in 2019 when at one point i was thinking about giving up on doing music, but then as time progressed, alot of famous celebs was cosigning me and my career started to elevate
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Polo Baybee. I am a recording artist straight out of Jackson, Mississippi. Mostly known for my underground hit singles such as “Left Cheek, Right Cheek “, “Get It Girl” , “Fast” , “Bizerk “ & the 2 Pvalley hits “F.I.U.S.” Which is featured on episode 203 & “WorkOut” that is featured on episode 208. I got into doing music when I was 13 years old, however I became a full time artist at 16 years old. Now, I’m 25 years old & been doing music for officially 8 years now. I think what set me aside from most artists is the fact that I’m trying to make music fun again. I want to bring back the turn up, twerk, & dance era back. I’m most proud of how far I’ve came as being an independent artist coming out of Jackson, Mississippi where alot don’t make it or feel like we can’t make it out. I want to show not just the world but my city that you can make it & be from Jackson, Mississippi.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I would say to one, stop waiting til an artist blow to support them. I feel like thats one of the being things upcoming artists have is the lack of support because folks wanna wait til you mainstream to support you. Number 2, this for every city especially my own, stop having your picks & chooses of who you want to support from your city. Thats the biggest problem everybody wanna have them certain artists they want to support instead of supporting all. Number 3, this for the artist, stop being in competition we all trying blow. Lets lift one another up!
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish I would’ve knew more about promo. Promo helped me alot in getting my music out there. If i knew about that, I’ll be much further.
