We recently connected with Polina Bogomolova and have shared our conversation below.
Polina, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
Since I was a kid, I knew that I will dedicate my life to a creative field, something related to big shows on big stages. I don’t know where I got it from, I just remember that it felt like I was born with this feeling. My parents were heavily involved in developing my creative skills, sending me to dance, painting, floral/design arrangement classes to help me find what it is that I really like. I loved all of the classes I’ve took, but after some time, it felt like I explored enough of it and wanted to move on to a new thing. And what’s funny about it is that I always enjoyed music and it was always right in front of me but only when I got to 4th grade and found my first favorite band ever, that’s when I realized that this is what I want to dedicate my life to. And this is how my story began – ten year old me, obsessed with My Chemical Romance, screaming their songs and dreaming to be like them!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I was born and raised in Moscow (Russia), finished my high school there and graduated with Bachelor’s Degree in Project Management from Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation, shortly coming to the US in 2019 to pursue my Entertainment Business Master’s Degree in Full Sail University.
Full Sail was my first step getting into the music industry which I’ve dreamt of for my whole life. After graduation, as an international student I was allowed to stay in the US for a year to practice my skills – and that’s how I found the company I’m currently a part of.
In the matter of that year, I started interning as a Music Management intern at L’ Affaire Musicale and ended up being promoted to an actual Events & Artist Manager, working with such artists as J. Worra, DJ Soda together with the CEO of the company, Tom Astley Williams (who mentored me from Day 1), and was able to stay in the US and continue my career in the industry.
Looking back, summer 2022 was one of the most unforgettable seasons in my life because I toured with J. Worra across the country and was her Tour Manager on the run with Swedish House Mafia “Paradise Again” North American tour. Being involved in the massiveness of those shows and logistics felt really like being on a completely new. another level.
Currently, as an Artist Manager, I work in pair with Tom Williams with two main clients of the company – J. Worra and MISS DRE. Both are crazy talented female powerhouse DJs and producers! As an artist manager, I help them with everything and anything I can – logistics, advances, representation, creative direction and etc. Some people, or maybe even a majority think that managers are there for their artists just to do the business side – network, negotiate, get deals and etc. And they are not wrong, but there is actually so much more to it. Being an artist manager means to brainstorm and explore all creative ideas for music, photoshoots, music videos, social media posts, logos, visuals – everything that allows to represent a vision of an artist in the best way possible. So yeah, as an artist manager I do all the “boring work” but, also, sit next to our artists to create and express their artistry together.
I’m very proud to see how our girls are thriving. J. Worra has been consistently killing it & growing in the game with multimillion streams on her tracks, headline tours in North America, Australia and New Zealand, and performing at basically all major festivals in the country (BUKU, Outside Lands, EDC, Bonnaroo, Okeechobee to name a few), adding to her long list Lollapalooza and Life Is Beautiful this year.
MISS DRE, who not only DJs and produces her music but also is a vocalist and can rap when it is need (like for her track “Holla”), is also on her festival streak – EDC, Splash House, Outside Lands, Hard Summer… in addition to the releases on such established labels as Insomniac Records, Thrive, Spinnin’, Ultra.
Honestly, cannot be more proud of!
As an Event Manager – I handle all the events our company has from back to front, which is mostly organizational, proactive work to make sure an event runs as smooth as possible and without any complications. However, there has been some development in that field of my work recently.
In partnership with the CEO of L’Affaire Musicale, Tom Williams, we started a new project called Memory Lane (@memorylanepresents on socials), where all events and its concepts are creatively directed and produced by me. Here, as you can guess, I got to do what I enjoy the most – create and brainstorm. Event theme, playlist/music program, decorations and other creative activations that can add up to the whole atmosphere of a night is what I work on. Our events started on June 9th at Station1640 and I’m so ecstatic about it! Truly makes me smile when I see people enjoying what I put together.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Not trying to be dramatic, but I feel like my whole story illustrates resilience and constantly teaches me it till this day haha.
It actually is a big thing to go to another country in order to pursue your career dreams and there is no way to do it without being resilient. If you are ready for this step, you will have to be that way in every aspect of your life because it is stressful to leave your family and friends and live without seeing them for years, it is difficult constantly remember that you have to work 100000x times harder than others because it is not your home country and not your language and you don’t have endless amount of time here (visas are temporary and have its limitations). Surprisingly, the biggest issue I had was my expectations. Expectations about everything when I came here – friends, career opportunities, timeline, and how perfectly everything will go according to the plan. And mind you, I was never delusional about it and objectively understood that things might not work out at all. Still, I ended up having moments which were completely out of my imagination. Sometimes it weren’t good news at all. And when it was happening, I kept reminding myself, “Adapt, adapt, adapt. Let’s see how can you resolve it? What’s an alternative angle you can look at here? Just do what you need to do and do your best and whatever isn’t in your hands you cannot stress about”. And every time when the future felt so unclear and unpredictable, I had the memory of my dad’s wish for one of my birthdays in the back of my head, “I just want you to keep going. There will be moments when it will be hard, but you just have to climb, step by step, slowly. Just never stop and don’t get stuck”.
And I kept going until I got out of those emotionally difficult moments. I consider this part of my journey as an example of being resilient.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
The first book which comes to my mind is Robert Greene “The 48 Laws of Power” – the way its written and what is written in there truly changed some believes that I’ve had about a management style and strategy.
Can I name a tv show as well? If it counts, then Succession – don’t event think I need to explain why! Haha
