We caught up with the brilliant and insightful PocketRocket Youngn a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
PocketRocket, appreciate you joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
I would have to say my current project is the most meaningful ever. I’m currently doing something that has never been done before. My current work in progress is The “2K24 Flood”, I’m dropping a song a day this year. Yeah that’s right 366 songs since it happened to be a leap year. My goal with this project is to teach that consistency is key and art shouldn’t be overthought. You have to create unapologetically and just express yourself. This project is more for me than my fans. So I can embrace the love of music again. I got so caught up in the professional grind. Caught in the tireless planning, waiting on music quarters, chasing trends and chasing that perfect track that I lost the whole goal of why I do this in the first place. I have currently dropped 89 songs this year at the time of this interview. Haven’t skipped a day and I don’t plan on it ! If you want to check out “The 2K24 Flood” all songs are out on all platforms! Be sure to follow and sub!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I started this dream a long time ago thanks to my mom she instilled the early learning skills as I was admitted into “Lamar Reese Magnet School Of The Arts”. Ever since I was young I dreamed of being a musician and entertainer so my whole life revolves around learning the skills necessary to sustain a living from my passion for music. I was gifted professional recording equipment when I was about 14 self teaching my self to be proficient in Pro Tools , I started recording music daily for me and my friends. Dove deeper into engineering honing my talents to be the engineer and producer that I am today. My love for rap never ceased I put my all into traveling, doing shows & open mics around the South Florida area building my brand and solidifying my spot in local hip hop history. Fast forward to 2020 I started my label “YTNC DA LABEL”. Building our notoriety to make a mark on this industry. Im most proud of my resilience and ability to adapt my creative process in a way where I can stay versatile and never get stale. Currently I’m working on my project “The 2k24 Flood” a year long project I’m dropping a new song daily. Im also very proud of my streak so far we 89 days in as of today.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
The biggest lesson I had to unlearn I would have to say would be that “good music always win” because that’s not necessarily the case. You don’t win in this music industry just because your are good. It’s hours upon hours of countless work, promo, hopes, & stress that comes with this grind. It’s not for the weak. So many people think man this song is so good I kno this the one and sometimes it takes a little more than that. Got to focus more on becoming the best at what you do and all the other stuff will come naturally. When you sorry to much about the end goal you miss the journey.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
I’m todays society it’s so many ways to support artists. It’s easy and I feel the best way is to interact with their content. Whether you like it or not all engagement is good engagement. So if you want to leave your opinion or constructive criticism go ahead it definitely would help. Also like and a share goes a long way. Most of the social media platforms have monetization nowadays so artist can literally get paid just by you liking a post. Last but not least most streaming sites are free and it takes only a few minutes to listen to something new you never know you might hear your new favorite song. Support local artist the most by just listening to some of their music.
