We recently connected with Po Yan Leung and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Po Yan, thanks for joining us today. I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
Yes, being an artist brings me incredible joy and fulfillment—it’s been a part of my life since childhood, a natural extension of who I am. Bringing my imagination to life through illustrations and sharing them with the world is deeply satisfying. However, like many, especially during tough times, I’ve pondered the stability of a traditional job. There were moments when I juggled a 9-to-5 while pursuing art at night. I have to admit, the routine of a regular job does offer a different kind of comfort. During burnouts or rough patches, I’ve entertained the idea of going back to a steady paycheck and having peace of mind. But at my core, the passion for creation trumps any uncertainties. I know I’m not cut out for 8-hour office days, 5 days a week, nor the monotony of repetitive tasks for years on end. If I were to succumb to that, I feel like my spirit would slowly fade away. My soul thrives on daydreaming, hands-on creation, and exploring various crafts. Being an artist grants me the freedom to pursue these passions in ways a conventional job couldn’t. And that, to me, is truly invaluable.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m Po, an artist deeply passionate about bringing imagination to life through illustrations. My inspiration stems from lullabies, folklore, animals (especially cats), and vintage art ranging from medieval manuscripts to 19th-century masterpieces, all infused with a touch of darkness. My journey into this creative realm began in childhood, sparked by my sister’s introduction to drawing. Doodles and daydreams became my constant companions, nurturing my love for storytelling through art. In my artistic career, I offer a variety of products and services, ranging from original artwork to prints and customized commissions. Each piece I create aims to evoke emotions and transport viewers to a whimsical yet mysterious world. Through my work, I aim to fulfill the longing for nostalgia and mystery, offering a unique blend of beauty and darkness that resonates with my audience.
What sets me apart is my ability to seamlessly merge contrasting elements—be it innocence and darkness or tradition and modernity—into cohesive artistic narratives. I take pride in my attention to detail and commitment to storytelling, ensuring that each piece not only captivates visually but also leaves a lasting impression on the soul.
Ultimately, what I want people to know about me and my work is that I pour my heart and soul into every creation. My art is more than just visual; it’s a journey through dreams and emotions. I invite them to join me on this journey, to explore the beauty and darkness that lie within, and to find solace and inspiration in the stories I weave.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
In my view, society can best support artists, creatives, and cultivate a thriving creative ecosystem by recognizing the immense value that art and creativity bring to our lives. This begins with investing in arts education from an early age, ensuring that all individuals have access to creative outlets and opportunities for expression. Additionally, providing financial support and resources for emerging artists, such as grants, scholarships, and affordable studio spaces, is crucial in allowing them to pursue their passion without the burden of financial insecurity. It’s encouraging to see that there are already many existing opportunities for such support and resources. Furthermore, fostering a culture that values and celebrates creativity in all its forms is essential. This includes promoting diversity and inclusivity within the arts, supporting artists from marginalized communities, and providing platforms for underrepresented voices to be heard. Breaking down barriers to entry into the arts will make it more accessible to individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Moreover, collaboration between the public and private sectors can help create a supportive environment for creatives by partnering with businesses, organizations, and local governments to fund public art projects, cultural events, and creative initiatives that enrich communities.
Ultimately, by prioritizing the support and empowerment of artists and creatives, society not only nurtures a vibrant cultural landscape but also fosters innovation, empathy, and social cohesion.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the ability to share my innermost thoughts, emotions, and visions with others through my work. There’s a profound sense of fulfillment that comes from knowing my creations can evoke emotions, spark inspiration, and resonate with people on a deeper, personal level. Witnessing the impact my art has on others, whether it brings them joy, comfort, or a sense of connection, is incredibly rewarding and fuels my passion to continue creating.
