We’re excited to share with you our interview with PLU5ONE, the media and music production DJ duo from Atlanta GA.
PLU5ONE, appreciate you joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
When we started our DJ journey, we knew we had to invest in the equipment that would better prepare us as professional DJs. Additionally, we studied how our favorite DJs prepared and performed sets from every musical genre you could imagine. By doing so, we dramatically strengthened our mixing techniques, tactics, and ability to make any crowd of people dance.
Learning the distinct differences between every genre/subgenre of music was extremely crucial in our musical journey. It was truly the only way for us to identify all of our favorite aspects of music, to mix and match favorite parts of each genre, and to be unique.
This brings us to our last aspect of learning our craft; learning the music business. We built relationships with promoters, local DJs, and venue owners. We are extremely grateful that they were able to give us our first paid DJ gigs and the continual positive feedback we were receiving from strangers asking for recordings of our set so they could listen at home was inspiring us which always reminded us to stay consistent with our craft.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Our name is PLU5ONE (pronounced “Plus-One”) and we are a DJ Producer Duo.
We dove into the industry by freelancing video production work for the local Atlanta rave scene such as Believe Music Hall, Twisted Lines, District Atlanta, Crazy Atlanta, Arcadia, Domaine, The Ascend Stage at Imagine Music Festival, and Renegade Stages at EDC Las Vegas. Some artists include Nakadia, Sam Wolfe, Shlomo, HNTR, WNDRLST, MADiSUN, Sara Landry, Atroxx, Naomi Luna, JD Ferrell, Ultraviolet Strings, VivCastle, Hyist, FAIRIEZ, Chozen, Authentik and more.
Simultaneously, we were throwing private rave parties when people started to take note of our DJ’ing. As the parties kept on getting larger and our amount of friends grew, we found ourselves surrounded by local artists and collectives to put us on lineups that allowed us to play shows around Atlanta. We still throw events and freelance video production to this day.
Before freelancing and events, we were always sharing new music with each other, DJing, and producing. We were also big on attending music festivals and shows which over several years gave us a strong sense of what types of sounds would get dance floors moving. We’re proud of being multi-talented and well-rounded artists who are able to understand production and why people love the songs, genres, and lyrics they do.
It’s helped set us apart – our dynamic blend of Jersey Club, Hard Techno, and Riddim guarantees a sweaty rave for everyone whether you are a booty bouncer, techno snob, or basshead.
We are excited to announce our upcoming shows this month:
September 15, 2023 – IMAGINE MUSIC FESTIVAL (Thoughts In Threads, Sweet Sounds, Vendor Village) at 9 pm
September 16, 2023 – IMAGINE MUSIC FESTIVAL (Arcadia Campgrounds Stage) at 2 am
September 23, 2023 – HOUSE PARTICK: EDM IN VIRGO at 8:30 pm
Follow us @PLU5ONE. You won’t want to mix the next one (;
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
That we are doing the thing that matters most in our lives and get to share it with new and beautiful souls every day.
Our goal is to build a life around dance music. Nothing would be more gratifying to us than to leave behind a sound and influence that would surpass our years.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Be extremely passionate about the music and the artist you enjoy. Then talk about it. Share it. Wear it. Move to it. Stay curious and expand your musical horizon to find more artists that you find interesting. Be that friend that puts people onto your favorite underground hidden gem first. This gives upcoming artists traction and support to succeed. Set notifications and reminders when new tracks drop for that artist and be present for their shows and events.
