We recently connected with Pjay Phillips and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Pjay thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
My mother and father were both creatives and taught me to lean into my talents. My mother was a talented seamstress who created many costumes for performers and private clients. My father was a painter and decorator, one of the first contractors of color to hold a City and County contract. They taught me what it takes to use my creativity to build my creative brand.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a soulful actor, singer, and choreographer whose passion for the arts shines through my every word and movement.
I had the opportunity to begin my artistic journey as a trained dancer, making a segue into acting, singing, and choreography, and I obtained my BFA in Musical Theatre. I then settled into writing and producing my music.
My ability to morph into different entertainment genres, build, and produce my work has helped me stand out. I have managed other creatives’ projects to ensure their artists’ visions are completed. I am incredibly proud of the work that I have done, including performance residencies in China, France, and Morocco, where I adapted to various global cultures and learned to sing in different languages, which were quite challenging.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist who can produce their shows is that I do not have to stand by and wait for someone to choose me. I can create and make my work, and that part feels incredible.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My love for the arts is my mission; I need to have a voice as a creative and give myself a platform to do so. The ability to create and produce completes and fulfills the need to develop good work. This passion drives me.
