We recently connected with PJ Sweeney and have shared our conversation below.
Hi PJ, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
As far as the most meaningful project goes, I guess you’d have to ask yourself, what means the most to you? It’s not all about the money. its not all about yourself, it’s about much more. Right now I am in a band called Doahs’ Daydream. I have been in this band for less than one year, and it has already been one of the best, most meaningful projects I’ve ever been a part of. First off, Doah is a strong, charismatic, female singer, who pushes me to be my best. When I get the green light to play my drums however I want, for the betterment of the song, that means a lot. This project also means so much to me because I get to support a strong female. The fact that I get to play my best drums, be my best self in front of so many people in so many different places, for money, while supporting a female lead singer ….that means the absolute world to me and is incredibly fulfilling. Doahs’ Daydream would have to be my most meaningful project to date.

PJ, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I first started playing in bands at about the age of 14. I was born and raised in Syracuse, NY and my first instrument was the bass guitar. When I turned 16, I fell in love with the drum kit. I then started playing in some bands with friends, covers and such until I joined a couple bands that I would play with for over 9 years and 100’s of shows. Lee Terrace and Phantom Chemistry are the bands that got me my reps, experience and the strength to move to San Diego and give my drum career a true shot. I moved to San Diego in late 2018 with my now beautiful fiance, and got right to work. Gino and the Lone Gunman was the first band to take me in, show me the ropes and it has snowballed from there. I’ll always be thankful for Gino and the boys. Since moving here I’ve been in several bands and have gotten 5 sponsorship / endorsement deals. I think a big part of my success is having a New York attitude, showing up on time, being respectful and having professional gear. Shoutout to Soultone Cymbals, Collision Drumsticks, Sledgepad Innovations, Westone Audio and Pork Pie Percussion.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being a performing musician is truly, seeing people smile, dance and sing to our music during a live set. When I’m playing drums in front of a crowd, theres no better feeling than looking up and seeing 10, 100 or 1,000 smiles look back at you. It’s a high that is unmatched.
